Fechko named assistant coach at St. Francis Brooklyn

Leah Fechko joins the St. Francis Brooklyn women’s basketball coaching staff one year after graduating the college, and leaving the program as one of the greatest players in school history.

Fechko will arrive back on Remsen Street replacing former assistant coach Kaitlyn Vican. The Twinsburg, Ohio native played professionally for the 2016-17 season in Dublin, Ireland with Killester Basketball Club.

“We are very pleased to welcome Leah Fechko back to St Francis College as a member of our women’s basketball staff,” said head coach John Thurston. “Her knowledge of St Francis, our system, the Northeast Conference and basketball in general made her an ideal choice to work with our younger players on a daily basis. She was an outstanding student, a team captain and role model, and she’ll be a great resource for all of our student athletes.”

As a Terrier from 2012-2016, Fechko strung together a list of accomplishments rivaling few if any in the history of Terrier basketball, and was one of the premier players across the NEC.

After earning All-NEC Rookie Team honors following her 2012-13 campaign, Fechko served as a core player for the 2014-15 NEC Champion Terriers that reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, for either basketball program.

In her senior season, the former guard took home NEC Defensive Player of the Year and All-NEC First team honors after putting together her best season statistically with 14.9 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.4 steals per contest, leading the team in each category.

Currently, Fechko is the only player in school history, man or woman, to record 1,200 career points, 800 rebounds, 250 assists and 200 steals. She currently ranks eighth in points in Terrier women’s basketball history with 1,216 points, fifth in rebounds with 855, tied for ninth in assists with 295 and third in steals with 233.

“I am thrilled for the opportunity to continue growing as a coach under coach Thurston,” said assistant coach Fechko. “He is the reason I had a great career as a player, and I know as a coach I will be able to help him with my knowledge of the game and having a positive impact on the young players. I’m looking forward to the start of a successful 2017-18 season!”
