Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Augustana University (SD) is seeking qualified applicants for a Head Women’s Basketball Coach. An essential partner in advancing the university’s strategic priorities and mission, the Augustana Women’s Basketball Head Coach will report to Vice President for Athletics and commit to the philosophy statement of Augustana Athletics, which aims to provide a student-athlete centered experience committed to distinction in the classroom, excellence in competition and faithful service to community. 

The university seeks a head coach with an established record of success as a head coach or assistant coach, with a passion for recruiting. In addition to a track record of competitive excellence, the head coach for Augustana women’s basketball will build on the foundation and culture of the program and play an integral role in growing the fan base for Viking Basketball.  While overseeing all aspects of the women’s basketball program, the head coach will also be a leader within the campus and Sioux Falls communities.  

The head coach will serve as the public face of the program, creating and maintaining a positive public image while recruiting and training student-athletes to compete for conference, region, and national championships. This position must also lead and maintain a program that competes with excellence through recruiting, on-court teaching techniques, scheduling, monitoring academic progress, budget management and fundraising, while also promoting the sport throughout the university and local communities. This position shall have a strong working knowledge and understanding of all NCAA rules and regulations regarding compliance issues.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Program. 
  • Oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of a successful recruitment program of prospective student-athletes.
  • In charge of facilitating an atmosphere conducive to the continued academic and athletic success of student-athletes, and for monitoring the academic programs of team members.
  • Oversee and plan all team practices and games aimed at developing and preparing the team for successful competition.
  • Manage all team related administrative tasks, organizing and administering tournaments or events.
  • Required to fulfill a variety of obligations to the conference and organization to which the sport is a member. This may include attending meetings and serving on committees.
  • Advise the VP for Athletics and/or designee on budgetary needs and manage team budget
  • Responsible for fundraising to support the program, the athletics department, and university (i.e., camps, clinics)
  • Develop and maintain positive alumni and community relations.
  • Build quality relationships and work collaboratively and professionally with athletics, university staff, students, and all constituencies and stakeholders.
  • Support, abide and enforce all academic guidelines and policies of the university, athletics department to insure academic progress of the student-athlete.
  • Support and work cooperatively with the Sports Medicine/Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, NCAA Compliance, Sports Communications etc. areas in accordance with department policies and procedures.
  • Abide and adhere to all written policies, procedures, and guidelines of Augustana University and the Department of Athletics. 
  • Represent the institution and the department in a positive and professional manner.
  • Successfully pass the NCAA Coaches Curriculum Required Courses. 
  • Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the Director of Athletics and/or designee.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Proven winner as head coach or assistant coach in the sport of basketball is required. Previous coaching experience in a collegiate level program preferred as an Assistant or Head Coach is preferred.
  • Minimum three years coaching experience in the sport of women’s basketball is preferred.
  • Team player who collaborates effectively with colleagues and stakeholders is expected.
  • Strong recruiting skills and extensive contacts with organizations and prospective student-athletes is required. Experience in recruiting academically sound, qualified student athletes is preferred.
  • Deep knowledge and understanding of all NCAA rules and regulations regarding compliance issues is necessary.
  • Strategic vision for the future as it relates to collegiate athletics, student-athletes and the way technology continues to impact the culture of the sport is needed.
  • Excellent communicator who understands different audiences is expected.
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty and leadership with different backgrounds and points of view and a deep appreciation of and respect for academic values and culture.
