North Dakota State University head women’s basketball coach Maren Walseth announced the hiring of Emily Mehr as the program’s new director of basketball operations on Monday, July 11.
“I am extremely excited to welcome Emily Mehr to the Bison family. Emily was an outstanding player at the University of Minnesota-Morris and has had some unique experiences since graduation,” Walseth said. “As the process developed, Emily really separated herself as someone with exceptional interpersonal skills, great experience at the conference office level, and with NCAA championships, and a burning desire to bring future success to our program. She will hit the ground running and make an immediate impact on our program.”
Prior to joining NDSU, Mehr spent a year as a staff assistant with the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference in St. Paul, Minn., where she helped the conference with numerous administrative tasks.
Mehr also served as a graduate assistant at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., from 2013-15 where she helped coordinate summer basketball camps in addition to team meals, lodging, travel and transportation. She also assisted the Viking coaching staff with game preparation and recruiting prospective student-athletes.
Mehr worked for the NCAA Championships in Sioux Falls from March through May, 2015, coached the West Central Wildcats AAU team in Morris, Minn., from 2012-15, and was an athletics intern for Minnesota-Morris from 2009-13.
“I couldn’t be more excited to be joining the Bison family here at NDSU,” said Mehr. “I am so grateful for the opportunity Coach Walseth and Matt Larsen have provided for me, and am eager to begin working with this great program.”
A native of Aitkin, Minn., Mehr was a standout women’s basketball student-athlete at Minnesota-Morris from 2009-13. As a senior, she was named a D3 News All-American and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Mehr ranked 12th in the nation in scoring in her final season with the Cougars with 21.1 points per game.
She graduated from UM-Morris in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management and a minor in communications, media and rhetoric. Mehr is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sport administration and leadership from Augustana.
