Erik Smiles, Director of Athletics, Recreation and Intramurals at Hostos Community College is pleased to announce that Dwight Shaw has been selected to lead the Women’s Basketball program.
“It is an honor and a privilege to welcome Coach Shaw back to Hostos” Stated Smiles. “From the beginning of the search process Coach Shaw stood out as a leader and someone who took seriously the task of mentoring student athletes not only on the court but academically on their journey to continuing their education and developing them as people.”
Smiles continued, “Coach Shaw’s past experiences, recruiting network and focus on player development have prepared him to lead this program and continue the high level of success it has enjoyed not only winning championships but preparing and placing student athletes at senior colleges.”
“I am honored to be selected to lead this program, the success that they have had here is something special and I look forward to the challenge of continuing the tradition” Stated Shaw.
Shaw added, “The tradition here is more then winning, it is being active in the community, developing these young ladies as people and preparing them for moving onto a senior college while also preparing them academically to graduate and have the tools to be successful academically.”
Prior to returning to Hostos Shaw spent the 2020-2021 season as the head coach at Bronx Community College where he over saw a successful recruitment effort to rebuild the program. The roster that Coach Shaw assembled was ready to compete for a championship but unfortunately the season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Before his stint as the head coach at Bronx Community College Coach Shaw was an assistant coach for the Hostos Men’s Basketball program from 2018 to 2020. Shaw was a major part of the Caiman Men’s Basketball programs success helping guide the Caimans to the 2020 CUNYAC Championship and the Region XV Championship which earned the Caimans a spot at the 2020 NJCAA Nationals. Coach Shaw also played an instrumental role in mentoring numerous Caiman Men’s Basketball student athletes onto the senior college level helping placed over a dozen student athletes at the D1, D2 and D3 levels. As an assistant coach with the Caimans one of Coach Shaw’s main responsibilities on staff was the pre-season conditioning program which has been a big part of the coaching staff’s implementation of the Caiman’s up and down fast-paced tempo and style of play. His other main responsibility was acting as the “defensive coordinator” for the Caimans. Coach Shaw has played a key role in building the full court pressure defensive system that has brought the Caimans so much success.
Prior to his time with the Caimans Coach Shaw helped lead the Nazareth Regional High School Girls’ Basketball program from 2010-2018 as the varsity assistant and head JV coach. Coach Shaw was responsible for player development at Nazareth where he oversaw the growth of a nationally prominent scholastic basketball program. During his time at Nazareth Coach Shaw developed dozens of college players including eight McDonalds All-Americans that would go on to play Division One basketball.
Coach Shaw has also been a major presence in New York City’s girls grassroots basketball scene. Currently Coach Shaw is a program coordinator for Castle Athletics where his focus is on youth player development for elementary and middle school age girls. Before joining Castle Athletics Shaw spent 2016-2020 as a coach with the New Heights girls AAU program patrolling the sidelines with the 16U and 17U teams which have produced countless Division One scholarship players. Coach Shaw is also no stranger to the gridiron. Since 2016 Coach Shaw has been the Assistant Varsity Football Coach at Holy Cross High School.
Shaw, presently a Physical Education teacher at Nazareth Regional High School in Brooklyn, New York graduated from Brooklyn College in 2010 with a dual degree in Physical Education and Exercise Science.
