Pierce College has announced the selection of Shelbie Drey as the next head coach for the Raiders women’s basketball program.
“Shelbie has been an integral part of the Raiders’ coaching staff, the past three seasons,” said Athletic Director Duncan Stevenson. “She has been a huge factor in the development of the team culture fostered by out-going head coach, Ariassa Wilson, which has focused on growing strong young women through academics, service to community, and basketball. Her familiarity with Pierce College and our returning team members will be a huge asset as we all move through our current COVID-19 situation and build the program over the next few years.”
Drey was a successful athlete at the collegiate level. She played one year at Dakota Wesleyan (SD), before transferring to Phoenix College (AZ). At Phoenix, she helped lead the Bears to a regional championship and place in the top 8 at the NJCAA National Tournament. She was named to the National All-Tournament Team and recognized by PC for her outstanding student leadership. Drey completed her final two years at Saint Martin’s University (WA), where she continued to be a leader on and off the court.
This is Drey’s first job as a head coach. In addition to her three years on the Raider staff, she has honed her coaching and teaching skills by working various camps including the Stanford University Women’s Basketball Elite Camp, under the legendary Tara VanDerveer.
“From starting off as a volunteer coach, then assistant coach, and now being named the head women’s basketball coach at Pierce College, I am truly honored to have this opportunity to continue giving back to the game and the school which has given so much to me,” stated Drey. “My mission is to strengthen the culture of our women’s basketball program and lead us to become fierce competitors in the NWAC. Beyond basketball, my goal is to empower and equip each woman who pass through our program with the skills and confidence to pursue excellence in every facet of their lives. I am beyond excited to continue my coaching career at Pierce College and I look forward to building a program our community will be proud of for years to come.”
Drey earned her bachelor’s degree in criminology and criminal justice from Saint Martin’s University and is currently working toward a Master of Education in positive coaching from the University of Missouri.
She currently works as a case manager/outreach specialist with Comprehensive Life Resources, in Tacoma.
