Tulane University women’s basketball coach Lisa Stockton named Chandra Dorsey the team’s new assistant coach on Friday.
“I have been impressed by Chandra over the years as our paths have crossed many times on the court and in recruiting,” Stockton said. “She has a reputation as an excellent recruiter and teacher. We are excited about Chandra joining our staff and getting started for a new year!”
Dorsey joins the Green Wave after spending the last five seasons as the associate head coach at Texas State. She led the way coaching the Bobcats’ defense and guards in San Marcos, Texas.
The Louisiana native coached four All-Sun Belt team selections and two first team and two third team spots. She coached the Bobcats’ first ever All-Sun Belt First Team selection as Taeler Deer was named Sun Belt Player of the year during the 2017-18 season. In that same season, Texas State finished with a 23-10 overall record and a 14-4 mark in the Sun Belt. The Bobcats earned a spot in the WNIT after reaching the Sun Belt Championship game. Texas State also earned a berth to the WBI during the 2016-17 season.
Dorsey is no stranger to American Athletic Conference teams as she served as an assistant coach at Wichita State during the 2014-15 season. She helped the Shockers earn their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and their third straight Missouri Valley Conference Championship. The Shockers finished with a 29-5 overall record and a 17-1 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) mark.
The Shockers produced the 2014-15 MVC Player of the Year, Alex Harden, and the MVC Defensive Player of the Year, Jamillah Bonner, under Dorsey. Both players earned First-Team All-MVC honors along with being named AP All-American Honorable Mention honorees. Harden was drafted as the No. 18 overall pick of the 2015 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury.
Prior to her time in Wichita, Dorsey had a second stint at Texas State and stops at Tulsa, Southern Miss and McNeese State.
Dorsey was a four-year letterwinner at the University of Mississippi. While at Ole Miss, she led her team to two postseason tournament appearances in 1999 and 2001 (WNIT), was selected as the team’s Most Improved Player in 1999 and Defensive Player of the Year in 2000. She was also selected as team captain during her senior campaign. Dorsey was named to the All-SEC Academic Honor Roll and was a member of the UMAA (University of Mississippi Athletic Association) Honor Roll.
A 2001 graduate of Ole Miss, Dorsey earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in sociology. Prior to her collegiate career, Dorsey prepped at St. Helena High School where she was named to the Louisiana All-State Team, All-Metro Team and was the 1996 & 1997 District MVP. Dorsey averaged 24 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds and her name appears on the 1000-point club scoring list with 1,200 points.
The Green Wave will begin the 2020-21 season in November.
