#16 DePaul beat cross-town rival Northwestern 70-68 this afternoon to give head women’s basketball coach Doug Bruno his 700th career collegiate victory.
Bruno is now coaching his 34th year at DePaul. his overall career mark stands at 740 including his 40 victories in two seasons heading up the Chicago Hustle women’s pro team. The veteran head coach became only the third active women’s basketball coach to reach the 700-win plateau at one school, joining Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma and Villanova’s Harry Perretta.
He has guided the Blue Demons to 17 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances—a feat only the NCAA elite of Connecticut, Notre Dame, Stanford and Tennessee can also claim. Since his return in 1988, DePaul has won 667 games, competed in 24 NCAA Tournaments and four Sweet Sixteen’s (2006, 2011, 2014, 2016).
The DePaul alum who played for legendary Blue Demon coach Ray Meyer has led the women’s basketball program to five BIG EAST regular-season titles in the last sixs years and four BIG EAST Tournament titles in the last six years. Most recently, DePaul came from behind to beat Marquette 74-73 in the BIG EAST title game on March 12, 2019 at Wintrust Arena.
