Delta State University Names Gary Redus Assistant Coach

Former University of South Alabama Jaguar and University of West Georgia assistant Gary Redus, II has joined the Delta State University Lady Statesmen basketball program as an assistant coach on Craig Roden‘s staff. Redus fills the void left by Shameka Thomas, who joined former DSU head coach Sandra Rushing’s staff at Central Arkansas.

“Coach Redus is a student of the game and possesses an outstanding work ethic,” Roden said. “We are excited to add him to our staff. He knows the Gulf South Conference having worked at West Georgia and he is a proven recruiter. I’m looking forward to getting to work with him and the Lady Statesmen.”

Redus spent the 2016-17 campaign as a graduate assistant on Scott Groninger’s staff at West Georgia. While in Carrollton, Ga., he helped develop UWG’s post players while assisting with game plan and practice development.

The Decatur, Ala., native, played four seasons (2011-2015) of professional basketball in China, South America and the Middle East before embarking on a career in coaching.

A 2011 graduate of the University of South Alabama with a degree in health education, the 6-foot-6 guard/forward played two seasons for the Jaguars. In 55 games at USA, Redus averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He was a two-time member of the Sun Belt Conference’s All-Academic Team.

Prior to transferring to USA, Redus spent one season at Centenary College, where he was named to the Summit League’s All-Newcomer Team in 2009. He also played one season at Marion Military Institute in 2008.

Redus is currently completing a master of arts degree in special education from West Georgia.

He is the son of Gary and Minnie Redus. His father played 13 seasons of Major League Baseball, including stops with Pittsburgh, Texas and Cincinnati.
