Davis named Women’s Basketball Head Coach at Kuyper College

Athletic Director Gary Bailey is pleased to announce that Shonett Davis has been named the Head Coach for the Women’s Basketball program at Kuyper College. Shonett served as an Assistant Coach for the program in the 2023-2024 season. Davis is taking over a program and group of players that won 16 games this past season, a school record. The Cougars lost in the Midwest Regional Championship this year, just missing the NCCAA II National Tournament.

Davis takes over the program with a great deal of basketball experience and knowledge. Davis, who is from Holland, MI, played high school basketball at Holland high School. During her playing career at Holland High School, Davis was a 3 year varsity starter and a 2 time varsity team captain. Additionally, she was a member of Holland High School’s winningest girls basketball team.

After her playing career, Davis turned to the coaching route, where she began as an Assistant Coach for Holland High School. After this, she was the General Manager and Skills coach for the Holland Dream, a semi-pro team in the PBL. Davis stayed in the semi-pro ranks, as she was the Head Coach of the Shoreline Wolves. Most recently, Davis was an assistant for the Kuyper College Women’s Basketball program.

Davis is very excited about the opportunity to lead the Women’s Basketball program. Coach Davis said, “First and foremost, all thanks to The Lord. Without Him I would not be where I am today. I also want to express my deepest gratitude to the selection committee, the school administration and every single person who has contributed to the vibrant community that makes this program what it is.  It is with great honor and humility that I stand before you today as the new head coach of the women’s basketball program.” Davis added, “Basketball, to me, is not just a game; it’s a journey, a lesson, and a passion that teaches us about teamwork, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence both on and off the court. It’s a powerful tool that shapes character, forges bonds, and instills values just like our faith journey does. It is an ever growing and changing journey with no end. There is always room for growth. And it is with this perspective that I approach my role as your coach.”

In discussing what her program will look like, Davis said, “As we look to the future, my vision for this team is clear. We will strive for excellence in every aspect. On the court, our gameplay will be characterized by discipline, teamwork, and relentless effort. We will play a brand of basketball that is not only competitive and successful but also exciting to watch and fun to play. Our strategies will be innovative, our preparation meticulous, and our execution flawless. But our ambitions go beyond just winning games. Off the court, we will be a program that prioritizes academics, personal growth, and community engagement. Every player will be encouraged and supported in achieving academic success and preparing for life after basketball. We will foster an environment where every team member can grow as a leader, learn the value of teamwork and develop a strong work ethic and moral character.”

When asked what she would like potential recruits to know about her, Davis said, “To all the players, I promise to be more than just a coach. I will be an example of good character, a mentor, your supporter and biggest fan. I will push you to be your best, challenge you to grow beyond what you think is possible, and support you every step of the way. Success, both on and off the court, is my top priority. In conclusion, the road ahead will be challenging. There will be victories and there will be setbacks. But with hard work, resilience and a shared vision there is nothing we can’t achieve. Together, we will write the next chapter in the storied history of this basketball program.”

Davis will look to build on the success that the program experienced in their first season back of having athletics at Kuyper College.
