Davis named Women’s Basketball Head Coach at Howard College

Howard College has announced Al Davis as the new Head Coach for the Hawks Women’s Basketball program. Davis, previously the Head Coach and Athletic Director at Eastern Oklahoma State College, will officially begin his duties on August 1, 2024, replacing former Head Coach John Ishee. 

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Davis to Howard College,” said Kyle Cooper, Athletic Director. “His extensive experience and successful track record will be invaluable to our program as we move forward.” 

Davis is familiar with the community college basketball scene as he began his collegiate playing career in Jacksonville, TX at Lon Morris College. Following graduation from Lon Morris, Davis went on to play at Bacone College in Muskogee, OK. 

He began his coaching career in Indiana at the AAU level, where he served as head coach for the 15U-16U girls and assistant coach for the 17U girls. During his tenure in the AAU Circuit, Davisdeveloped 26 players who went on to play Division I athletics. His success at the AAU level quickly transitioned into collegiate coaching. 

In 2015, Davis became the Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for Dominican University in Illinois. Soon after taking this role, he had the opportunity to return to his alma mater, BaconeCollege, to take on the role of head coach for the junior varsity team and Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for varsity. From there, he continued his coaching journey at Garden City Community College in Kansas before becoming the Head Women’s Head Basketball Coach for the Mountaineers at Eastern Oklahoma State College in 2019 and additionally would become that Athletic Director in 2022.

While with the Mountaineers, Davis amassed an impressive 96-50 overall record and a 54-26 conference record, earning NJCAA Region 2 Coach of the Year honors in 2022. Under his leadership, the Mountaineers achieved numerous accolades, including Region II Player of the Year, South Central District Coach of the Year, National Tournament Qualifier, Region II Tournament Champions, and OCAC Conference Co-Champions, all while maintaining a team GPA of 3.6. 

Davis holds an associate degree in computer science from Lon Morris College, a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Bacone College, and a master’s degree in sports administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
