Davidson Named as New Schreiner University Head Coach

Samantha “Sam” Davidson, formerly the assistant women’s basketball coach at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, has been named the new head coach for Schreiner University Women’s Basketball.

Davidson, a four-year standout player for former Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference member Birmingham Southern, has been at Rhodes College for the past two seasons under head coach Matt Dean. During her tenure at Rhodes, Davidson coached five All-SAA players. The team finished in the league’s top three in all defensive categories and also finished second in the league in three-point shooting. She was also responsible for two very strong recruiting classes for the Lynx.

Prior to her time at Rhodes, Davidson served as assistant girl’s basketball coach for Webb School (TN) and helped the team win a state title in her one year in the position. Prior to that, she served under Hall-of-Fame head coach Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee for one year. While on the Lady Vols staff, she worked with current UT head coach Holly Warlick.

At BSU, Davidson was a three-year starter and four year player who ended her career in the program’s top five in career assists and the top-10 in 3-pointers made, 3-point shooting percentage and free throw percentage.

SU Athletic Director Ron Macosko on Davidson’s hiring: “We are very excited that Coach Davidson has agreed to take our head coaching position. I received glowing recommendations from people in the women’s basketball arena and college athletics who I respect greatly. She came in a did a tremendous job in impressing our campus community.  She’s young, energetic, has a great vision for the program and has a strong commitment to academic success. She articulates her knowledge of X’s and O’s very clearly and has a defense-first philosophy. I’m sure that she can be tough when needed but you could really sense that she cares about her players and will push them and mentor them to be the best they can be in their college careers. In short, she’s a perfect fit for Schreiner Women’s Basketball and we look forward to watching what her teams will do in the years to come.”

Quote on Sam Davidson from Rhodes Assistant AD and former Rhodes all-time winningest head women’s basketball coach, Matt Dean:  “Schreiner University is getting one the most talented young coaches in all of Division III women’s basketball. Coach Davidson is the total package. She is an outstanding recruiter, excels in player development and – most importantly- is a great person who will represent the University with great class, character and dignity. I am excited for Sam to receive an opportunity to become a head coach and she will be greatly missed in our department.”

Davidson inherits a Schreiner team that went 11-16 overall and 8-6 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, finishing fourth in the league during the regular season and advancing to the SCAC Tournament semifinals. The Mountaineers graduate four significant contributors including two All-SCAC performers but return a stable of talented and battle-tested players for 2017-18.

She has already started her duties as head coach and will be moving to Kerrville in May to physically take over the program.
