Daily Dirt – 3/19/12

Here we go….our first-ever WhoopDirt “Daily Dirt”….

Crazy situation at Florida Atlantic….as most of you know, head coach Chancellor Dugan was told before the season that this would be her last – she was not going to be retained. A funny thing happened however….the Owls won 17 games and earned an NIT berth! FAU has been pretty quiet about the situation, and we are not sure if Dugan will still be shown the door as the two sides agreed to last spring or not. If she is released, rumor is that Cleveland State head coach Kate Peterson Abiad would be the front runner to replace her. Her team struggled this season (12 wins), but she had a 21-win season in 2010-11. More importantly is the fact that FAU President Mary Jane Saunders worked in student affairs at Cleveland State and is said to be very high on Peterson Abiad. This is definitely a situation to keep an eye on.

I have heard that the University of Hawaii has assembled a four person search committee to identify a replacement for Dana Takahara-Dias as the new women’s basketball coach. According to sources, as of last week, 41 coaches have applied for the job. In her three seasons at Hawaii, Takahara-Dias was 32-58 (15-31 WAC). It sounds like the committee will be very patient with this search. Their first meeting was last Wednesday.
