MSU Denver Athletics officially announced the hiring of Mario Caetano as the 13th head coach in the history of the Roadrunners women’s basketball program, the department announced Friday morning.
Caetano arrives in Denver following a highly successful tenure at Adams State University, where he became the winningest coach in program history while transforming the Grizzlies into a consistent contender within the RMAC.
“Having the opportunity to serve as the head coach at MSU Denver is truly special,” Caetano said. “I believe this program has the potential to compete at an elite level.”
Under Caetano’s leadership, Adams State reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the past three seasons while also advancing to the RMAC Tournament in four consecutive years. He guided the Grizzlies to a share of the RMAC regular season championship during the 2023-24 season and earned RMAC Coach of the Year honors following the 2022-23 campaign after leading one of the most successful turnarounds in the conference.
Known for his ability to build winning teams, recruit at a high level and develop student-athletes on and off the court, Caetano established himself as one of the premier coaches in the RMAC during his tenure in Alamosa.
“We are thrilled to welcome Mario Caetano to MSU Denver as the next leader of our women’s basketball program,” said Athletic Director Todd Thurman. “Mario is an established winning coach who understands the RMAC, values the student-athlete experience and has consistently demonstrated the ability to build strong team cultures. What he accomplished at Adams State speaks for itself, and we’re excited for him to bring that same energy, leadership and championship mindset to MSU Denver.”
Caetano pointed to the university’s tradition and location as major factors in his decision.
“MSU Denver has always been very attractive to me because of its unique location and rich tradition,” Caetano stated. “My family and I are incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and we are beyond excited to join the Roadrunner family.”
Caetano’s success at Adams State was fueled by his emphasis on player development, defensive identity and team culture, helping turn the Grizzlies into a respected program within one of Division II’s toughest conferences.
In addition to his head coaching success, Caetano brings extensive experience in recruiting, scouting, game preparation and program administration, giving the Roadrunners a proven leader with deep familiarity throughout the region.
He also expressed gratitude to the MSU Denver administration for entrusting him with the program moving forward.
“I want to thank the entire athletic department, along with Athletic Director Todd Thurman, for believing in me and giving me this opportunity,” Caetano said.
Caetano now takes over a Roadrunners program with a rich history of success at both the RMAC and national levels and will immediately begin preparing for the 2026-27 season.
With his history of winning, extensive RMAC experience and reputation as a program builder, MSU Denver Athletics believes Caetano is well-positioned to lead the next era of Roadrunners women’s basketball.
