ASU Mid-South turns to a proven recruiter as Mercedes Corona takes over as Head Women’s Basketball Coach, it was announced by Athletic Director Chris Parker.
Corona comes to the Lady Greyhounds after serving as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. HPU won the West Division title two of the last three years and is the most successful program in the American Southwest Conference having gone 187-61 (.754) with 15 straight postseason appearances, seven NCAA Tournament appearances and one NCAA National Championship.
“Coach Corona is a great fit for our institution, brings great energy to our program, and has a history of recruiting outstanding student-athletes,” said Parker. “Her drive, work ethic, and plan for our program are very impressive, and her teaching experience was a great match for this position as well. Coach Corona is a go-getter, and she will usher in an exciting new era of Lady Greyhound basketball.”
A native of Granger, Texas, Corona was responsible for recruiting student-athletes who earned nine All-Conference honors, two Conference Defensive Players of the Year, one Conference Player of the Year, one Conference Freshman of the Year, and one NCAA All-America player to HPU.
At Granger High School, Corona was named All-Region and District Offensive MVP before moving on to play three seasons at Schreiner University (TX) where she graduated early with a B.A. in Exercise Science, not using her final season of eligibility. She then worked one season as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the women’s basketball team and earned her M.Ed. in Education.
Her experience includes working in a sports information department where she dealt with everything from statistics to game day operations, and she has also been involved with many community events including working basketball camps, volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club and serving as a YMCA youth basketball coach.
“I am very excited and ready to build a culture everyone can be proud of,” said Corona. “I was looking for the opportunity to be a head coach, and the draw of being able to build something on my own, the challenge, is what really appealed to me. I’m ready to get to work.”
