Colleen Moriarty Joins NJIT Women’s Basketball Coaching Staff

NJIT women’s basketball head coach Mike Lane announced the addition of Colleen Moriarty to his staff for the 2022-23 season after following a six-year stint at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire as an Assistant Coach.

With Moriarty’s assistance, Saint Anselm appeared in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament five times (out of her six seasons on the sidelines), including two appearances in the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Championship (2019-20; 2018-19).  The 2018-19 season culminated with the programs first-ever NCAA Division II East Region title and trip to the Elite Eight.

“I am delighted to have Colleen join our program,” said Lane, who will begin his fifth season at the helm of the Highlanders this fall. “She brings the perfect mix of experience, skill and passion to Newark. Her time at Saint Anselm with Corey Boilard within the rugged Northeast 10 Conference has prepared her well for this next step in her career.”

Moriarty helped develop all-time leading scorer Peyton Steinman (’22), who finished with 1,781 career points and earned 2022 NE10 Player of the Year accolades and Shannon Ryan (’20), a 2020 Division II All-American and NE10 Player of the Year, who scored 1,769 career points.

“I am absolutely thrilled to join Coach Lane, his staff and the Highlander Family,” said Moriarty. “I want to thank Coach Lane for this incredible opportunity to be a part of the program. I am so honored and grateful to work with such a competitive and driven group of student-athletes and will continue to build on what they’ve started. It is an exciting time for NJIT Women’s Basketball and I can’t wait to get work! Go Highlanders!”

Prior to joining the Saint Anselm women’s basketball coaching staff, Moriarty was an Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator at UMass Boston for two seasons (2014-15; 2015-16).

She helped develop and mentor post players at UMass Boston, including Kirsten Morrison (’15) and Olivia Murphy (’16), who were All-East Region and All Little East Conference selections while scoring over 1,000 points in their careers.

“Colleen has proven that she can recruit to an academic environment like the one here at NJIT, can bring the best out of her players and can prepare teams to compete every night,” Lane added. “Her boundless enthusiasm is what really sets her apart, it is so genuine. I can’t wait for her to start working with our squad!”

Moriarty started her coaching career as an Assistant Coach for the Bay State Monarchs 16U, AAU program and Assistant Girls Basketball Coach at Canton High School Girls varsity program in 2013-14.

A 2013 graduate of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with a Bachelor of Science in Business, Marketing, Moriarty will complete her Master of Science in Sport Management from Southern New Hampshire University in August 2022.

A four-year member of the women’s basketball team at UMass Dartmouth, Moriarty finished her career with 1,219 points. She was named 2013 LEC Player of the Year (first in program history), selected to the New England Women’s Basketball Association All-Northeast Region, D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region and ECAC First Team All-Star.

A three-year team captain, Moriarty led the Corsairs in her senior campaign to its first 20-win season in program history, averaging 19.0ppg, 8.3rpg and 2.0bpg.  Moriarty was inducted into the 2021 UMass Dartmouth Corsair Hall of Fame on October 9.

Moriarty played for the Brockton Lady Thunder, a semi-professional basketball team in Massachusetts in 2013-14.

In addition to Moriarty, earlier this summer, Lane announced the addition of Payce Lange as Assistant Coach.  Moriarty and Lange will join fifth-year Assistant Coach Aaron Gratch and Anyssa Sanchez who will begin her third season as Director of Basketball Operations on the sidelines.
