Cleveland named Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Flagler College

Flagler College women’s basketball coach Mo Smith announced that Sydney Cleveland has joined the basketball staff as an assistant coach. Cleveland played four seasons for Smith at Georgia College (2015-19).

“I am very excited to have Sydney Cleveland in our program,” said Smith. “While coaching Sydney at Georgia College, she was an outstanding leader with a competitive spirit and a work ethic that was unmatched. Her willingness to always want to learn, grow and pour into the lives of others made it an easy decision to hire Sydney. She will do an outstanding job being a mentor to the student-athletes in our program. It is great to have her a part of the Flagler Saint family.”

Cleveland served as a graduate assistant this past season at Georgia College. She worked with the development of guards for the Bobcats. Cleveland also served as a staff mentor for the Game Changers for Leadership program for student-athletes. In that role, she helped research and delivered presentations on topics like character and professional development, team building, and leadership skills.

As a player, the 5-foot-10 forward was a three-point threat for the Bobcats. She is fifth all-time in three-pointers made with 157 and her 66 treys in 2018-19 is currently tied for fifth-most in a season at Georgia College. Cleveland was just as impressive off the court as she was a three-time Peach Belt Conference All-Academic team member as well as being a two-time D2 ADA award recipient. She was a three-time PBC Presidential Honor Roll scholar. Cleveland as the president of Georgia College’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2018-19.

The Gainesville, Georgia native earned her bachelor’s in mathematics with a concentration in teaching from Georgia College in 2019. She is working on her master’s in instructional technology, also at Georgia College.

Cleveland joins returning assistant coach Joe Harding, special assistant to the head coach Cazzie Russell, and volunteer assistant Malaysia Robinson on Smith’s staff at Flagler.
