Cierra Morris Named Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Chicago State

First-year Chicago State University head women’s basketball coach Misty Opat announced today the recent appointment of Chicago native Cierra Morris as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2018-19 season.

Morris, who began her duties in mid-September, joins the Green and White after spending five seasons as an assistant coach under Opat at Rock Valley College, a junior college located in Rockford, Ill. She helped the Golden Eagles capture five straight North Central Community College Conference (N4C) championships, four National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region IV Division III titles and three NJCAA D-III national titles during her tenure at RVC.

“I’m very ecstatic to bring Cierra on to our coaching staff at CSU having played for me and coached with me (at Rock Valley). She always anticipates my next move and is a rising star in this business, said Opat. “I know that she will work extremely hard and is loyal and driven to help build this program to excel in the Western Athletic Conference.”

Prior to coaching at Rock Valley, Morris played guard at Southeastern Louisiana, a member of the Southland Conference by way of Hammond, La., from 2011-13. She also earned NJCAA D-III All-America honors as a sophomore at RVC in 2011 and won an IHSA Class 3A state championship under the legendary Dorothy Gaters at Marshall High School in 2008.

Morris received her bachelor’s degree in general studies with a coaching minor from Southeastern Louisiana in 2013 and was named to the school’s Dean’s List.
