Christopher Newport University head women’s basketball coach Bill Broderick announced that Trinese Fox and Nicole Mitchell will serve as assistant coaches for his fifth season with the Captains.
“I am extremely excited to welcome Coach Fox and Coach Mitchell to our coaching staff,” Broderick said. “I believe they are a great fit for Christopher Newport University and will help strengthen our program with high-caliber work ethic and determination. Both are former student-athletes and coaches bringing experience that will be a great benefit to the players in our program, both on and off the court.”
Fox joins the CNU sideline for the first time after a four-year career with the South Carolina State University Bulldogs in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Division I scholarship player earned All-League honors once and was also once named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Following her final year at South Carolina State University, Fox moved from the court to the sideline and served as an assistant coach for Lenoir Community College during the 2013-14 season. She assisted with daily practices, developed physical fitness and implemented a team strength & conditioning program. From there, Fox returned to the Hampton Roads area to take an assistant coaching position at Nansemond River HS in Suffolk, Va. In two years with the Warriors, Fox helped coach a pair of first team All-Conference forwards and led the team to a 17-win season in 2015-16.
Also joining Broderick courtside in 2016-17 is a familiar face to Captains’ fans, as 2014 alumna Nicole Mitchell returns to Newport News. A member of CNU’s Final Four team in 2011, Mitchell was a team captain for two years and was a three-time All-Conference selection. With Mitchell as an integral piece, the Captains reached the NCAA Tournament in three of her four seasons, including a Final Four, Elite Eight and Sweet 16 finish. She ranks 13th all-time in career scoring with 1,262 points, and she also hauled in nearly 700 rebounds.
Mitchell joins the staff with extensive camp instruction since 2010, working at basketball camps at Christopher Newport, the University of Maryland, and in northern Virginia. Since 2014, she served as assistant girls’ basketball coach for the Fairfax Stars, an AAU team that won the Boo Williams Nike Invitational Championship in 2016. While working toward a Masters in Human Services at Hood College, Mitchell also served as assistant women’s basketball coach for the Blazers from 2014-16. She worked with post players and was responsible for coordinating recruiting efforts both on and off campus.
Fox and Mitchell join Christopher Newport after the Captains made their third NCAA Tournament appearance in four seasons under head coach Bill Broderick. CNU finished the year ranked 17th nationally after a 24-5 overall record and NCAA Sweet 16 finish. In four seasons under coach Broderick, the Captains are 94-23 with a winning percentage over 80%.
