La Salle University head women’s basketball coach Mountain MacGillivray has announced that Chris Day will join the women’s basketball program as associate head coach.
“I’m excited to have Chis join our staff at La Salle,” said MacGillivray. “A good deal of what I know about recruiting at the Division I level I learned from Chris. Through the years we’ve shared ideas and game plans that have helped make our respective teams successful, and I’m looking forward to doing it together here at La Salle.”
Day spent the previous two seasons as the head coach at the University of Vermont. There he coached Hanna Crymble to an America East All-Conference Second Team selection in 2017-18, making her the first Catamount to earn the honor since 2011. Day’s team registered the top field-goal percentage defense in the America East (36.1%) during his first season in 2016-17.
“I’m so excited to return to La Salle University, and grateful for this opportunity given to me by Coach MacGillivray,” said Day. “I’m excited to share with future student-athletes all that La Salle has to offer and help restore the proud tradition of this great women’s basketball program.”
Day returns to Philadelphia after having spent three seasons (2013-16) as an assistant coach at Penn. He helped guide the Quakers to Ivy League Championships and NCAA bids in 2013-14 and 2015-16, and a 2014-15 WNIT appearance.
Day also spent seven seasons at Saint Joseph’s before coaching the 2012-13 season at Indiana. Day helped Saint Joseph’s to a 128-94 record and six WNIT appearances during his seven-year tenure on Hawk Hill. At Indiana, Day helped the Hoosiers double their Big 10 win total from the previous season and signed the nation’s leading high school scorer in Tyra Buss (now of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun).
Day got his start in college basketball as an assistant at Widener in 1999 before being elevated to head coach in 2000. In his final season at Widener in 2002-03, Day led the Pride to their first postseason appearance in 20 years. Day also spent a season as an assistant at both Duquesne and La Salle before his tenure at Saint Joseph’s.
Day is a 1997 graduate of West Chester University, where he was a four-year letterwinner in both football and track. He and his wife Megan have five children: Christian, Olivia, Morgan, Cassidy and Bryce.
