West Virginia State University President Brian O. Hemphill and interim Athletic Director Nate Burton introduced the new women’s basketball coach Monday at a press conference in the in the Earl Francis Lloyd Lobby of the D. Stephen and Diane H. Walker Convocation Center.
Charles Marshall was welcomed by a large crowd of staff, students, alumni, and media.
The Louisville, Kentucky, native comes to WVSU from Glenville State where he served as Head Women’s Basketball Coach for the past three seasons.
Prior to that Marshall spent two years as an assistant coach with the Pioneers.
While an assistant he helped Glenville State capture the 2011 WVIAC tournament championship.
The Pioneers fared even better during Marshall’s first year in charge finishing 29-4 and winning the inaugural Mountain East Conference regular season and tournament crowns.
His 2014-15 squad finished with a 15-13 record and the Pioneers wound up this past season 17-12 and in fourth place in the final regular season MEC standings.
He spent two years as an assistant coach at Berea College in Kentucky, his alma mater, before going to Glenville.
Marshall had a distinguished playing career at Berea. His freshman season he played an important part on a squad that advanced to the NAIA national semifinals. Marshall led his school back to the NAIA national tournament as a senior and was named a first team All-Confernce performer and Honorable Mention All-American.
