Chanel Murchison ’13 Returns to William & Mary Women’s Basketball Program as Assistant Coach

William & Mary head women’s basketball coach Ed Swanson announced the hiring of former student-athlete Chanel Murchison ’13 as an assistant coach.

“I’m really excited to welcome Chanel back home to William & Mary as a member of our coaching staff,” Swanson said. “Her energy and enthusiasm for the school, community, and our program really showed in the interview process, and I can’t wait for her to bring the same energy and enthusiasm to our program this season.”

Following graduation from W&M, Murchison has spent the last four years as a member of the coaching staff at John Carroll. She worked in all facets of the program, including overseeing budgets, recruiting, and academics. For the first two seasons she was a graduate assistant, before being elevated to an assistant coach for the final two seasons. During her tenure she helped guide the Blue Streaks to 64-41 record, a pair of NCAA DIII Tournament Appearance (the first two in school history), and a pair of 22 win seasons. Murchison also helped mentor nine players to All-Ohio Athletic Conference honors, including an OAC Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honoree.

“The opportunity to return to your alma mater to continue your career is beyond special and a rarity in this profession,” said Murchison. “I couldn’t be more blessed to return to William and Mary, and have the opportunity to give back to a community that has given me so much. I am thankful to Athletic Director Samantha K. Huge and Coach Swanson for selecting me to fill this position. I am ready to put to work everything I learned here as a student-athlete and my past four years at John Carroll University. Ms. Huge’s vision for this department and our student-athletes, adds a new level of excitement for our future. Coach Swanson’s success and reputation of growing great programs is already in the works, and I couldn’t be more excited to join his ranks and learn from him.”

Murchison was apart of the Tribe women’s basketball program for five seasons and appeared in 88 games with 45 starts over three seasons of action. She finished her career with 129 points, 175 rebounds 81 assists, four blocks, and 46 steals. She was also very involved in different facets of the athletic department working with the marketing and sports information departments.
