Central State names Cole as new Women’s Basketball Head Coach

Central State University Athletic Department and Director of Athletics Kevicia Brown has announced the hiring of Annitra Cole as the next head coach of the women’s basketball program.

Central State University is thrilled to announce the appointment of Annitra Cole as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach, effective fall 2024. This pivotal role marks the culmination of years of preparation and dedication to the sport, and Cole is poised to bring her extensive experience and proven track record to the Marauders.

Coach Cole’s coaching career has been characterized by a commitment to excellence and a talent for elevating programs. Most recently, she served on the coaching staff at Norfolk State University, where she played an integral role in leading the Spartans to an impressive 53-13 overall record over two seasons. Under her guidance, the team celebrated back-to-back Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships and secured consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, while four of her student-athletes earned MEAC All-Conference honors.

Prior to her tenure at Norfolk State, Cole gained invaluable experience across several NCAA Division II institutions. As an assistant coach at Virginia State University, she contributed to the team’s notable success, including a thrilling run in the CIAA Tournament, where they upset higher-seeded teams to reach the semi-finals. At Kentucky State University, Cole served as acting head coach for part of the season, leading the Thorobreds to their most successful campaign in three years, highlighted by a trip to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game.

Cole’s coaching journey began at her alma mater, North Carolina Central University, where she not only contributed as an assistant coach but also enjoyed a celebrated playing career. During her time as a student-athlete, she helped lead the Eagles to historic achievements, including their first NCAA Division II “Sweet 16” appearance.

Beyond her on-court achievements, Cole has demonstrated a strong commitment to student-athlete development and compliance. At Washington Adventist University, where she served as head coach from 2011 to 2014, she was instrumental in the academic and athletic success of her players, fostering an environment of growth and achievement.

Cole’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in History from North Carolina Central University. Additionally, she has participated in prestigious coaching programs, including the NCAA and BCA Achieving Coaching Excellence (ACE) Program.

As a native of Oxon Hill, Maryland, Cole brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the game to Central State University. Her passion for coaching and dedication to the development of student-athletes make her an excellent fit for the Marauders.
