Carr resigns as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Santa Clara

Santa Clara women’s basketball head coach Bill Carr has resigned after eight seasons of leading the program. Director of Athletics Heather M. Owen made the announcement on Saturday.

“I want to thank Coach Carr for everything that he did for this program during his time as a Bronco,” Owen said. “The women’s basketball program saw great success under his leadership and is set up for continued success moving forward because of the groundwork he laid. I wish Bill and his family nothing but the best in the future.”

Carr, who was hired on April 15, 2016, guided the Broncos to a 119-125 (.488) record in his eight seasons at the helm. The Broncos had three winning seasons under Carr’s leadership, each coming over the last four seasons. His 119 victories are the second-most in program history.

The 2023-24 campaign was one of the best for the women’s basketball program in its history. The Broncos finished the year with 25 wins (second-most in program history), hosted the opening round of the inaugural WBIT and defeated BYU in that opening round for their first postseason victory since 1992. Santa Clara was 13-1 at home and set program records with 12 nonconference wins, 11 road wins and seven wins in the month of November.

“After eight incredible years at Santa Clara University, I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from coaching,” Carr said. “It has been an honor to lead this program and to call SCU home. I’m immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished together—on the court and off—and grateful for the relationships I’ve built with our student-athletes, coaching staff, and the Bronco community. Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way. I’ll always cherish my time here and look forward to watching the continued success of Santa Clara Athletics.”

Santa Clara Associate Head Coach Michael Floyd has been named the interim head coach and assistant coach Kristin Iwanaga has been elevated to associate head coach. Kerri Nakamoto will remain assistant coach and Tahlia Garza will remain the program’s assistant coach, director of operations. A national search for Carr’s replacement will begin immediately.
