The UC San Diego men and women’s basketball programs have taken a significant step forward toward Division I success both on and off the court with the appointment of a familiar figure in Triton hoops history.
Former Triton head men’s basketball coach Bill Carr will serve as the General Manager of both programs, a position that has become integral in the modern era of men and women’s college basketball.
Carr will be responsible for implementing and managing a comprehensive basketball name, image and likeness (NIL) program and will serve as a valuable asset toward roster management, recruiting and overall program success for both the Triton men’s and women’s basketball programs.
“I am excited and extremely grateful for the opportunity to return to UC San Diego,” said Carr. “With the current state of college athletics and its quickly changing landscape, the athletic department is demonstrating incredible vision and commitment with the creation of this position. I look forward to working with the scholar-athletes, coaches and community as we continue to build the Triton basketball tradition in this new Division I era.”
“We look forward to welcoming Bill Carr back to the Triton basketball family,” said UC San Diego men’s basketball head coach Eric Olen. “He has a diverse blend of experience that combines coaching, familiarity with UC San Diego and strong relationships in our community. His passion, level of creativity and forward-thinking leadership will be a tremendous resource for our players and help launch UC San Diego forward in the modern college basketball landscape.”
“The Triton family is excited to welcome Bill Carr back to UC San Diego,” said Triton women’s basketball head coach Heidi VanDerveer. “Bill brings a wealth of experience working in both men’s and women’s basketball, a tremendous understanding of the recruiting process, as well as an extensive knowledge of the game. The combination of his skill set and visionary approach will greatly benefit us as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of Division I basketball. Beyond his strong ties to the San Diego community, Bill has a deep understanding of what makes UC San Diego such a special place, making him the perfect person to assist us in our evolution as premier basketball programs.”
Carr returns to UC San Diego following an 8-year stint as head women’s basketball coach at Santa Clara University where he complied 119 wins and coached 15 all-league players. His 2023-24 Broncos posted a 25-9 overall record and went 12-4 to finish as regular season runners-up in the West Coast Conference.
He returns for his second stint in America’s Finest City after serving as the head men’s basketball coach at Point Loma Nazarene (2011-16), associate head men’s coach at the University of San Diego (2007-11) and the head coach of the Tritons (2004-07).
While leading UC San Diego, one of his noteworthy accomplishments was the hiring of current Tritons head men’s coach Eric Olen as an assistant coach in 2004. Olen, who previously had played for Carr at Spring Hill College in Alabama, spent an additional five seasons under Chris Carlson before taking over as the reins of the Tritons program in 2013.
A graduate of the University of San Francisco with a degree in accounting, Carr served as an assistant under Jim Brovelli at his alma mater for nine seasons before spending three years as head coach at Spring Hill. He returned to California to serve as associate head men’s coach at Long Beach State prior to his time at UC San Diego.
