Cal State Bakersfield Director of Athletics Kyle Conder announced Tuesday that the Roadrunners will not renew the contract of Greg McCall, Head Coach of the CSUB women’s basketball team. CSUB will begin a national search to find just the fourth head coach in the program’s history.
“We appreciate Greg’s service and leadership to CSUB,” Conder said. “He made a lasting impact on both CSUB Basketball programs, and he created an undeniable legacy as a Roadrunner. I know that he will be successful moving forward and I wish him and his family the very best.”
In 13 seasons at the helm of Bakersfield, McCall’s `Runners have earned 13 All-Conference recognitions for their athletic achievements while 22 received Academic All-Conference honors. Under his watch, McCall guided CSUB to postseason appearances in 2014, 2015, and 2018, including a pair of WNIT appearances.
While McCall has led the `Runner women’s basketball program for 13 years, his connection to CSUB runs even deeper.
An alumnus of the CSUB men’s basketball team, McCall helped the `Runners to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 1991 as a team captain. Following his graduation, the native of Alabama stayed in Bakersfield, joining the CSUB men’s basketball coaching staff where he helped guide the 1997 squad to a NCAA Division II National Championship.
McCall continued to invest into Kern County, spending 10 seasons as the Head Coach at nearby Taft College before receiving the call to come lead the `Runners. His family also grew up in Bakersfield as McCall’s son, Justin, is a recent graduate who also played basketball in the CSUB Blue and Gold.

Greg McCall on his time at Cal State Bakersfield:
Tagged with: Big West“First I want to thank God for blessing me with the opportunity for being in one place for 17 years and 13 years as the third Head Coach in program history at CSUB. On top of that, I had the honor to wear the Blue and Gold as a student-athlete as well. There are so many people that have played an instrumental role during my time here at CSUB, including President Emeritus Dr. Horace Mitchell, Vice President Dr. Thomas Wallace, Kenneth ‘Ziggy’ Siegfried, Men’s Basketball Coach Rod Barnes, Dena Freeman-Patton, and Cindy Goodmon.”
“I want to thank my assistant coaches that have worked with me. We made a huge impact on a lot of Student-Athletes’ lives. I want to really thank my family for always supporting me, especially my wife Tanae and my kids. I can’t hang my head or be upset. That’s the nature of this business…At the end of it I can raise my hands and say, ‘Man, what a ride, what a joy, what a thrill to be in the position that I have been in so long.’ Love You `Runner Nation and GO RUNNERS!!”
