Mia Johnson has been named assistant women’s basketball coach at the College of Charleston as announced by head coach Candice M. Jackson on Monday.
Johnson joins the Cougar family after spending the last four seasons as the top assistant at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, under head coach Kevin Chaney.
“I’m very excited to have Mia on board here at The College,” said Jackson. “I’ve watched Mia progress through the years and have grown more and more proud of her each step along the way. She is a mother, she has a master’s degree, she has good rapport with people and she is a very good coach. I’m happy to have her here in Charleston.”
Prior to her time with the Lopers, Johnson worked as an assistant coach in the prep ranks at De La Salle High School in Minneapolis, MN., as well as at her alma mater, North High, also in Minneapolis.
An outstanding player, Johnson enjoyed a stellar career at both Saint Louis University (2004-05) and Michigan State (2006-2009). For the Billikens, she averaged a team-best 17.1 points per game, earning team MVP and Conference USA All-Freshman team honors.
After transferring to East Lansing, Johnson made 60 starts over three seasons, was a two-time team captain and was chosen team MVP as a senior. A two-time Big 10 All-Academic selection, Johnson played on two NCAA Tournament teams, including a sweet-16 run in 2009.
Over her collegiate career, she averaged 8.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game.
Following her time in East Lansing, Johnson enjoyed a brief stint overseas, where she played professionally in Leipzig Germany.
Johnson holds a B.A. degree in Communications from Michigan State as well as a Master of Science degree in Education from Nebraska Kearney.
“It’s a dream come true for me to be playing under my mentor Coach Jackson,” said Johnson. “It gives me great pleasure to have the opportunity to work with one of the brightest young minds in the game today. I am extremely excited about being a part of her staff as well as being at such a tremendous institution in the College of Charleston.”
Johnson’s hire marks staff complete for first year head coach Candice M. Jackson, who this past week also announced the hirings of Assistant Coach Darren Guensch and Director of Operations Courtney Davidson. Bob Clark – who was the program’s associate head coach under Jackson’s predecessor, Natasha Adair – remains with The College in the same capacity.
