SUNY Potsdam Director of Athletics Mark Misiak has announced the promotion of Michael Busby to Bears interim women’s basketball head coach for the 2026-27 season.
“We are confident that Mike’s leadership, dedication, and deep understanding of our program make him the right choice to step into the role of interim head coach” Misiak said. “His commitment to our student-athletes and desire to create a positive team environment ensure a steady transition moving forward.”
Busby has been with the program for each of the last eight campaigns. He served as the program’s assistant coach from 2018 until the 2023-24 season when he was named associate coach. With the Bears, he has assisted in every facet of program including recruiting, player development and fundraising. He has helped guide four of his players to seven All-SUNYAC nods as well as one conference rookie of the year. Two of those players reached the 1,000-point plateau. The program has seen tremendous growth during his time in Potsdam.
“Being named head women’s basketball coach at SUNY Potsdam is truly a dream opportunity,” said Busby. “I want to thank the administration for their confidence in me and for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading this program. I am excited to continue building meaningful relationships with our student-athletes and to create an environment where they can thrive academically, athletically and personally.”
Busby is ready to hit the ground running and has a clear vision for Bears women’s basketball.
“Our goal is to develop student-athletes who compete with passion, represent SUNY Potsdam with pride and leave a lasting impact on the program and the community. I look forward to working with our players, alumni and supporters as we continue to move the program forward.”
Busby has master’s degree in management with a specialization in organizational leadership from SUNY Potsdam. He earned a bachelor’s degree in professional studies in management with a specialization in sport management from Cazenovia College. He also has an associate’s degree in business administration from Jefferson Community College.
The Bears open 2026-27 at St. Lawrence University on November 10.
