Burt inks 4-yr contract extension at Duquesne

The Duquesne University Department of Athletics announced Monday that it has signed head women’s basketball coach Dan Burt to a four-year contract extension through the 2027-28 season.

“I would like to thank President Ken Gormley and Vice President of Athletics, Dave Harper for the continued support of our women’s basketball program,” Burt said. “With their guidance and support, we have been able to achieve high levels of measurable success on the court and in the classroom during my tenure at Duquesne. You win with great administrations and we have great people helping us be our best every day.”

The all-time winningest coach in program history, Burt has had unprecedented success in both the Atlantic 10 Conference as well as nationally. He’s posted a 209-132 (.613) overall record while tallying a 107-66 (.618) mark in Atlantic 10 action. Since taking over in 2013-14, Burt’s 209 wins rank third by any A-10 school, with only Fordham (215) and Dayton (210) acquiring more. His 107 conference victories are third most in the A-10 as he currently sits seventh all-time in league history. In 2023-24, Burt led the Dukes to 21 wins, the sixth most in school history while posting the seventh 20-win campaign under his leadership. Duquesne’s 13 conference victories tied the program record for most A-10 wins while being the third time they’ve reached that mark under Burt.

The Pennsylvania native surpassed a pair of milestones last season as he captured his 100th career A-10 victory on Jan. 24, in a 72-59 victory over Richmond. Just four days later, Burt became the first women’s basketball coach in Duquesne history to eclipse 200 career victories. He conquered the honor on Jan. 28, with a 73-57 victory over Loyola Chicago. Continuing with his success, Burt has recruited and coached 16 players who have earned all-conference honors 35 total times as well as 20 1,000-point scorers. He featured a rarity last season where only four other schools in the country accomplished which was six 1,000-point scorers in the same season. Burt has also coached five players that received the Atlantic 10 Conference highest postseason awards.

“Our women’s basketball team members represent what is best about our program,” Burt said. “Our Duquesne women are a polestar for any young athlete who aspires to be their best. Our student-athletes academic success in challenging majors while continuing our winning basketball tradition in the A-10 is coupled with strong community service that enriches the Western Pennsylvania region. I am incredibly lucky and filled with pride to represent such a great university and to work with outstanding young women.”

Burt enters his 18th year on staff and 12th season as head coach at the helm in 2024-25. In 17 years, he’s complied an overall record of 332-200 (.624) as well a 158-99 (.615) mark against league foes. He’s been a part of 11 20-win seasons as well as 11 postseason appearances, six coming under his leadership. He led the Dukes to the semifinals of the A-10 tournament for the first time since 2018 while earning a spot in the Super 16 of the WNIT. Since becoming head coach, Burt is tied with VCU for third in total A-10 semifinal appearances (5), trailing only Dayton and Saint Louis.
