New Mexico women’s basketball coach Yvonne Sanchez has completed her coaching staff for the 2012-13 season, naming former University of Texas star Edwina Brown as an assistant coach. She joins Joe Anders and Anthony Turner as assistants on the staff.
Brown joined the coaching ranks last year with her alma mater the University of Texas after a stellar playing career. She spent one season at Texas as an assistant coach under Gail Goestenkors.
Brown was drafted by the Detroit Shock with the No. 3 pick in the 2000 WNBA Draft and played five years in the league, including three seasons in Detroit and a year each with the Phoenix Mercury and Houston Comets. In 2000 she finished in a three-way tie for runner-up for WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.
She also played professionally overseas. Brown played internationally in Lebanon, Austria, Spain, France and Israel.
