University of Oregon women’s basketball head coach Paul Westhead will not have his contract renewed for the 2014-15 season.
“I am going to complete my contract with the University of Oregon,” Westhead said Tuesday, as the Ducks prepare for this week’s Pac-12 Conference tournament in Seattle. “At that time I will pursue other options in the basketball world. I had a good experience here with the Ducks and wish the best for the team going forward.”
Westhead’s contract is set to expire March 31.
“We want to thank Paul for his service at the University of Oregon.” said Director of Athletics Rob Mullens. “He is an iconic figure in basketball and we wish him and Cassie well in the future.”
Westhead joined the Ducks in 2009, registering an overall win-loss record of 65-90 and a mark of 27-64 in Pac-10/Pac-12 play.
He came to the Ducks after serving as an assistant coach for the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder. Westhead is the only coach to have ever won an NBA and WNBA championship as a head coach.
He has served as a head coach of men’s collegiate programs at LaSalle, Loyola Marymount and George Mason. He has also been a head coach in the professional ranks with the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Stars (ABA) and Phoenix Mercury (WNBA).
The University of Oregon women’s basketball team finished the 2013-14 regular season at 15-14 (6-12 Pac-12). The Ducks have not made the NCAA tournament since the 2004-05 season.
A national search will be conducted for the new women’s basketball coach at Oregon.
The search committee will be chaired by Senior Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women’s Administrator Lisa Peterson. Serving on the committee will be Special Assistant to the Athletic Director Lorraine Davis, Faculty Athletic Representative Jim O’Fallon, Senior Associate Athletic Director Craig Pintens and Senior Associate Athletic Director/Compliance Chief Jody Sykes.
