Iona College director of athletics Eugene Marshall, Jr. and future director of athletics Rick Cole, Jr. announced the appointment of Billi Godsey as the seventh head coach of the women’s basketball program. Godsey comes to New Rochelle after spending two seasons as an assistant at Virginia Tech.
"I am thrilled for the opportunity to begin my career as a head coach at Iona College," said Godsey. The women’s basketball tradition is strong and one I am grateful to be a part of."
"I am looking forward to working with this talented group of young women and a supportive administration," she added.
"We are very excited to have Billi join the Iona College family," said Marshall. "Her energy, passion and knowledge of the game are the right fit for the Maroon & Gold."
"Billi will bring a great deal of energy and excitement to the Iona College women’s basketball program," said Cole. "We are eager for her to lead our program into a new chapter."
"Billi represented all the important characteristics we were looking for in our next women’s basketball coach," added Cole. "I am confident that her unique skill set will help our program to continue to flourish and grow on an already strong foundation of history and tradition."
Hokies’ head coach Dennis Wolff invited Godsey to join his staff after taking over the program in 2011-12. Virginia Tech improved its Atlantic Coast Conference mark in both seasons under Wolff and Godsey.
Prior to Tech, Godsey served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at UMBC under head coach Phil Stern for three seasons. During the 2010-11 campaign, the Retrievers finished 20-12 earning the America East regular season championship and a berth into the Women’s NIT.
Godsey spent two seasons as an assistant at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, NY. Under the tutelage of Tim O’Hagan, she helped guide the Lions to their first-ever East Coast Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2008. Molloy posted a 34-26 overall record in her two seasons on the bench.
While at Molloy, Godsey also served as an athletics administrator. She was the Lions’ Associate Director of Athletics, Senior Woman Administrator and Compliance Officer. She joined the Molloy staff after two years in the conference office as Associate Commissioner for Operations and SWA for the ECC.
The Cheverly, MD native attended Archbishop Carroll High School and was a four-year letter winner at Hofstra. Godsey played in 79 games and made 28 starts from 1999-2003. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Hofstra in psychology in May 2003 and a master’s degree in psychology from Adelphi University in November 2005.
