The University of Toledo has hired Ginny Boggess (BOG-is) as the 10th head women’s basketball coach in program history, Vice President and Director of Athletics Bryan B. Blair announced today.
Boggess comes to the Glass City after serving the previous three seasons as the head coach at Monmouth University, where she inherited a two-win team and coached them to a NCAA tournament appearance in just her second season at the helm. Boggess led the Hawks to their first 20-win campaign in 13 years this past season and finished one victory shy of the program record. Boggess previously served as an assistant coach at Penn State (2019-21), Marquette (2014-19), Columbia (2013-14), Jacksonville (2008-13), Hofstra (2006-08), and Kennesaw State (2003-06).
“We are ecstatic to welcome Coach Boggess and her family to Team Toledo,” said Blair. “A 21-year coaching veteran, she has demonstrated the ability to recruit and develop talent at the highest levels of Division I, while excelling academically and competing for championships.
“Ginny has an infectious energy and elite interpersonal skills. As she met with those involved in the search process, she left no doubt that she was the ideal fit for our program, University, and community. I am confident that she will build on our storied history and lead us to new heights.”
Boggess guided Monmouth to a 22-10 overall record and a 14-4 league record in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) this past season. Senior Jania Hall was named the CAA Sixth Player of the Year, while seniors Kaci Donovan and Ariana Vanderhoop received Third-Team All-CAA accolades. In addition, the Hawks ended the regular season with a school-record 12-game road winning streak that ranked third in the nation.

I can’t wait to get to know all the players and build on the success the program has enjoyed throughout the years.”
While at Penn State, Boggess served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, where she helped develop the Nittany Lions’ guards, including Kamaria McDaniel who earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors as the conference’s second-leading scorer with an average of 19.8 points per game in 2019-20. She also helped guide Maddie Burke to Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year honors in 2020-21, while Johnasia Cash and Makenna Marisa both earned All-Big Ten accolades that season.
Before her time in State College, Boggess spent five years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Marquette. She helped guide the Golden Eagles to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. The program registered a 76-26 record (43-11 in Big East), which included a pair of Big East regular-season championships and a Big East Tournament Championship. Marquette advanced to the NCAA round of 32 in her last two seasons.
At Marquette, Boggess recruited the duo of Allazia Blockton and Natisha Hiedeman, who went on to earn Big East Player of the Year honors in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Blockton graduated as the all-time leading scorer in men’s and women’s basketball history at Marquette and earned back-to-back Big East Scholar Athlete of the Year honors in 2018 and 2019. Hiedeman was selected as the No. 18 overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft and currently plays for the Connecticut Sun.
A native of Hamlin, W. Va., Boggess began her collegiate coaching career as a graduate assistant at Kennesaw State. After one year as a GA, she was promoted to assistant coach, working primarily with perimeter players.
As a 2003 graduate of Wingate University, Boggess was a four-year starter for the Bulldogs, averaging 10 points and five rebounds during her career. She earned South Atlantic Conference awards, both on and off the court. Boggess was selected to the All-Rookie Team as a freshman and earned a spot on the conference’s academic honor roll all four years. During her sophomore campaign, Wingate received a bid to the 2001 NCAA Division II Tournament.
Boggess’ official introduction as the Rockets’ head coach will be held on campus at a later date.
