Boston University women’s basketball head coach Katy Steding announced Monday the promotion of Cindy Blodgett to associate head coach.
“Cindy’s resume speaks for itself,” started Steding. “She is a proven winner and an asset at every level and in every capacity in her career. Although she is talented and driven at the observable qualities like recruiting and x’s and o’s, we know that the intangibles are the things that make a huge difference for BU Women’s Basketball. Cindy brings a human kindness to all of her relationships, mentoring coaches and players, meeting people right where they are at and is a great developer of people. I’m proud and honored to have her as a friend and colleague.”
With nearly two decades of coaching experience in the Northeast, along with being Steding’s first hire in 2014, Blodgett has been instrumental in guiding the Terriers to steady improvement since returning to Boston, where she earned her first assistant coach position in 1999. This past season, she helped BU post an 11-7 record in Patriot League games, its highest win total since joining the league in 2013.
“I’m truly honored and humbled for this promotion and feel so blessed to be a part of this university, athletic department, and the women’s basketball program,” remarked Blodgett. “Each day, I am thankful to have the opportunity to work for Coach Steding and to be able to interact and coach our amazing student-athletes at a place as special as Boston University.”
A four-time All-American, Blodgett is one of two women NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in scoring for two consecutive seasons. She was also a two-time America East Player of the Year and was a preseason candidate for the Naismith Player of the Year award in 1997 and 1998. Inducted into the inaugural Lawrence High School Hall of Fame in 2016, she finished with a state-record 2,596 career points, three Maine Gatorade Player of the Year honors and guided Lawrence to four Class A State Championships.
Following her storied career in Maine, Blodgett went on to become a WNBA First-Round Draft Pick. She was selected sixth overall by the Cleveland Rockers in 1998, the second WNBA draft. She played in the league for four seasons and also played overseas in Korea and France before embarking on her coaching career.
