Blake Huber tabbed as assistant women’s basketball coach at Arkansas Tech University

Arkansas Tech University head women’s basketball coach Dave Wilbers has announced the hiring of Blake Huber as an assistant coach for the storied Golden Suns program.

“Our Arkansas Tech women’s basketball program is excited and wants to welcome Blake Huber to our team. Coach Huber has coaching experience both on the Division I & II levels and has coached at winning programs every year in his career,” remarks Wilbers. “He has the knowledge and experience in recruiting student-athletes that have excelled both in the classroom and on the court. His goals of winning championships go right along with our beliefs and commitment within Golden Suns Basketball.”

Huber joins the Golden Suns after a two-year stint at The University of Texas Rio Grand Valley (UTRGV). While at UTRGV, Huber helped guide the Vaqueros to only their fourth postseason appearance ever in 2018-19 as the team competed in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). That opportunity to play in the WBI came after UTRGV made their way to the WAC Championship Game, but ultimately fell to New Mexico State, 76-73 in double overtime.

“I am super excited and blessed for the opportunity to be the new assistant women’s basketball coach at Arkansas Tech. I am very thankful for Coach Wilbers giving me such an amazing opportunity,” said Huber. “The rich tradition that Coach Wilbers has built at Arkansas Tech is second-to-none. Arkansas Tech women’s basketball carries a lot of weight in Division II, and I cannot wait to get to work and try to stay at that elite level. I have witnessed first-hand the success at ATU from my days at Pittsburg State and Henderson State, and am thrilled to be a Golden Sun!”

Prior to his time at UTRGV, Huber spent one season at GAC-rival Henderson State University. That year, Huber helped guide the Reddies to a 21-9 overall record and a third-place regular season finish in the highly-competitive GAC after posting a program-record 16 conference wins. The 21 wins also were the most wins for the program since 2005-06.

The season at Henderson was Huber’s first as a full-time assistant coach, but he was not short on coaching experience before that serving as a student-assistant at a pair of DII powerhouses at Pittsburg State University (2014-15 – 2016-17) and Drury University (2013-14).

While at Pitt State, Huber helped lead the Gorillas to an 81-19 overall record, NCAA Regional Tournament appearances in all three years highlighted by an Elite 8 appearance in 2015-16. Youtube or Vimeo video full URL:
