Bianca McGee is ready to continue the Wiley College women’s basketball team’s winning tradition, as she was officially introduced as head coach during a press conference Tuesday at Alumni Gymnasium.
“I plan to keep our winning tradition going,” McGee said. “I’m up to the challenge. I want to lead the Lady Wildcats to be great people on and off the court, in the community, and continue their success in the classroom.”
McGee succeeds Ashley Walker – who was hired as head coach at Mississippi Valley State University after leading Wiley College to a 39-17 record in her two seasons. McGee joins the Lady Wildcats after spending last season as an assistant coach at Trinity Valley Community College. In 2015-16, she was an assistant coach at Ranger College and served as acting head coach.
As a player, McGee was team captain at Kilgore College from 2010-2012. She also helped with administrative duties including creating team schedules, leading team meetings and critiquing game film. She played her final two seasons at NCAA Division I program Western Kentucky University and also became team captain.
She had the opportunity to try out for WNBA teams New York Liberty and Indiana Fever. McGee was heavily involved in community service with participation in various outreaches, basketball camps and high school basketball programs.
Athletic Director Dr. Joseph L. Morale, who is also the senior vice president of student affairs and retention services, explained why he chose McGee.
“When I talked with McGee, she emphasized that she was self-motivated, dedicated and a fast learner,” Morale said. “I asked her if she was up to the challenge of leading a highly successful program and she did not hesitate with a resounding yes.”
The Lady Wildcats return eight from last season’s 22-7 and Red River Athletic Conference semifinalist team. Taylor Hawkins (JR/Sacramento, California) is the only returning starter. Ty Colquitt (SO/Irving, Texas) averaged 21 minutes off the bench and some starts. Malachi McQueen (JR/Leesville, Louisiana) is the leading returning scorer with 6.5 points per game. Ariel Taylor (JR/Houston, Texas) averaged eight points per game in six games played. She missed the rest of the season recovering from injuries she suffered in a car accident.
“In order for a team to be truly successful, it’s going to take everyone in the athletic department and campus. I hope you all will help me on this journey of excellence.”
