After a thorough, nationwide search, Keystone College Director of Athletics, Ryan Novitsky, announced the hiring of new Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Al Berger, on Monday.

“I’m very excited to welcome Al to Keystone,” explained Novitsky. “During his interview, his vision, passion, and connections all stood out. He inherits a very talented group and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the team this season and in the future.”

Berger brings with him over a decade of coaching experience at both the high school and NCAA Division III levels.

“I am extremely grateful to Ryan Novitsky and the search committee for selecting me to be the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Keystone,” said Berger. “It is an exciting task to help this team defend their CSAC Championship while working to develop and maintain a program built for long term success. I am fortunate to have worked alongside some exceptional coaches who helped prepare me for this role.”

Berger joins Keystone after most recently serving as the Interim Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Pine Manor College from 2019-2020, as well as leading the Massachusetts Huskies AAU, ninth grade team.

While at Pine Manor, Berger was named ACAA Co-Coach of the Year and led the Gators to the ACAA Tournament Semifinals.

Berger’s first collegiate head coaching position came from 2017-18 at Salem State University. His team finished 9-17 overall and 5-7 in conference play.

He has also spent time as an assistant coach or volunteer assistant collegiately at Brandeis University (2018-19), Wheelock College (2016-17), Wellesley College (2012-16) and Lasell College (2011-12).

His head coaching career began at Hopkinton High School from 2008-2011 where he was the Junior Varsity Head Coach, as well as the Varsity Assistant Coach.

A native of Massachusetts, Berger earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Framingham State University in 2005 and later earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Canisius College in 2012.

He is married to his wife Cassie and they have two children, Donovan and Jocelyn, as well as their dog, Juno.
