On Tuesday afternoon, the Fresno Pacific women’s basketball program and head coach Tim Beauregard announced the additions of Doug Carter, James Stevens, Shannae Thiesen and Katie Menton to the coaching staff for the upcoming season.
Doug Carter
Serving as the lead assistant, Carter brings more than 16 years of coaching experience, including ten seasons as a head man at various levels of amateur basketball. He has coached two USCAA All-Americans and more than 20 Scholar-Athletes, and his teams have consistently knocked off ranked opponents.
Most recently, Carter served as the head coach and Assistant Athletics Director at the University of Maine-Presque Isle, where he was named the Great South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in 2014. Carter previously coached at University of the Cumberlands, Virginia-Wise, Allegheny County-South, the United Stated Merchant Marine Academy, and his alma mater of Lock Haven University. In addition to the college ranks, Carter spent seven years at the high school level, as well as one season in the World Basketball Association Exposure League.
“Coach Carter is a proven high-level coach with a track record of top-notch recruiting and player development. It was a clear decision for me to contact him and ask him to join our team here at FPU. I know how much passion and energy he has for coaching and how tireless of a worker he is. There is no doubt that he will quickly have a positive impact on the direction of our program. I am thrilled for what he brings to the table as a seasoned coach and even more excited for the players in our program and how much he will do for them both on and off the court.” – head coach Tim Beauregard
James Stevens
No stranger to the Fresno area, Stevens has spent the last four years as the head coach at Immanuel High School, compiling a record of 86-31 along the way while winning four consecutive sectional championships. Prior to his time at IHS, Stevens led Parlier High School to a 45-35 slate, pushing his total win percentage to .664 during his seven-year stretch as a head coach.
Stevens was named as the Coach of the Year by the Fresno Bee in 2012 and 2014 and recently earned his second League Coach of the Year award in five seasons. After his squad finished as the 2014 Southern California D5 runner up, Stevens now has seen eight former players go on to college careers and has four league championships under his belt (1 at PHS, 3 at IHS).
“Coach Stevens is a stellar basketball coach, and I have had the pleasure of watching him grow and develop his program and his players over the course of many years. His ability to progress his teams and maximize their potential each year is remarkable. I’m excited to have Coach Stevens be a part of our program and know he will have a great impact in a multitude of areas. His leadership skillset lends itself well to the direction of where we are headed. There is no doubt in my mind that he will be an integral part of the new era of Sunbirds basketball.” – head coach Tim Beauregard
Shannae Thiesen
A 1997 graduate of Fresno Pacific, Shannae Thiesen returns to her alma mater for her second stint with the Sunbirds. She previously served in a similar role for the Blue and Orange, coaching alongside Tim Beauregard while the two were both assistants.
During her four years as a point guard for the ‘Birds, Thiesen showed excellent court vision and currently ranks fourth on the program’s all-time list with 432 assists, averaging 3.60 per game. Additionally, Thiesen played in 120 career games for FPU, which was the school record at the time of her graduation.
“Shannae is somebody who has mentored and impacted countless young women both on and off the court. Her ability to connect with her players and inspire them to achieve their goals is second to none. When I got the opportunity to lead this program one of the first calls I made was to Coach Thiesen in the hopes I could get her to be a part of this new era. She has a decorated playing career with FPU and has been integral in mentoring numerous student-athletes since her playing days. Having Coach Thiesen a part of our program will only aid in our pursuits of excellence in all areas. I am thrilled to have her and know she will hold me accountable and serve our student-athletes exceptionally.” – head coach Tim Beauregard
Katie Menton
After contemplating playing overseas, Menton decided to get into coaching, and a previous connection with Beauregard seemed to be her logical choice. Both played under Gary Blate at Yosemite High School, where Menton’s 2,245 points still make her the leading scorer in school history. She added four D3 CIF Championships, was twice named the Fresno Bee’s Player of the Year, set the program’s steals record, and won the Central Valley ESPY for Female Athlete of the Year.
Her successes at Yosemite took her to Pepperdine, where she was named to the West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team in 2008. She sunk six three pointers in a game on three occasions, 66 in one season, and 212 for her career, good enough for second on the Waves’ all-time list. She finished her Pepperdine career in 2012 with 1,163 total points, making her the 17th member of the program’s 1,000 point club.
“I am ecstatic to add Coach Menton to our staff and know she will do great things for us. Katie was a tremendous player and will no doubt seamlessly transition in to a coaching role with the same passion and energy in which she played. She understands the landscape of high-level college athletics and will be a great resource for our players and coaching staff alike. There is no doubt in my mind that our players will greatly benefit from having a coach that intimately understands the life of a student-athlete.” – head coach Tim Beauregard
