Doane University women’s basketball interim head coach Ryan Baumgartner has been promoted to Head Coach, Director of Athletics Matt Franzen announced on Friday. Baumgartner has been leading the Tigers since late November. He becomes the sixth head coach in the 48-year history of the program.
“Ryan has come into a difficult situation, taking over an unfamiliar program mid-season, and we feel has done a tremendous job,” Franzen commented. “He has an intimate knowledge of Doane University and has a vision of what he would like our program to become. We are excited to introduce Ryan as our Head Women’s Basketball Coach.”
Baumgartner served as a graduate assistant for the Doane women’s basketball program from 2015-17 and the men’s top assistant from 2017-2019. During his time working with the women’s program, Baumgartner helped develop 2017 GPAC Player-of-the-Year Hanah Barnard. He graduated from Doane in 2014 and was a four-year member of the Tigers’ basketball team. Baumgartner earned a master’s degree in business management in 2017 from Doane.
“I would like to thank Mr. Franzen and President Carter for giving me this opportunity,” Baumgartner said. “I am very excited to continue leading this program into the future and reestablishing the winning tradition that is Doane Women’s Basketball. My family and I are as equally excited to continue being a part of the community of Crete.”
Doane returns to action on Saturday, January 25, at 2 PM against Dordt University in Crete.
