Ball State University head women’s basketball coach Brady Sallee has announced the hiring of Roman Tubner as an assistant coach.
“I am beyond excited to have Roman Tubner join our staff,” said Sallee. “From the moment this position opened, Roman was on my radar. For years, I have always paid attention to the assistants I see on the road hustling and he was someone I took notice of early and often. Throughout this process Coach Tubner showed time and time again that he wanted to be a part of our program. I believe he will impact us on and off the floor. I can’t wait for all of Cardinal Nation to meet Roman, Kyndra and Skylar!!!”
Tubner joins the Cardinals staff after spending the 2019-20 campaign as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). While on the Seahawks staff, Tubner worked with three student-athletes who garnered All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) honors, including the CAA Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Prior to his arrival in Wilmington, Tubner spent the 2018-19 season at Indiana State University where he was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) 30 under 30 list. The award recognizes 30 up-and-coming women’s basketball coaches age 30-and-under at all levels of the game for their exemplified involvement in community service, mentorship and impact on others, professional manner and attitude, and professional association involvement. In Tubner’s lone season in Terre Haute, the Sycamores average 62.3 points per game, the team’s highest scoring output in five years. Tubner also helped ISU coordinate one of the top recruiting classes in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Tubner brings a wealth of collegiate coaching experience to Ball State, as he has also seen stints at Austin Peay State University (2017-18) and Arkansas Tech University (2014-17). He helped the Governors produce a 16-14 record for the program’s most wins in a decade. Tubner worked primarily with Austin Peay’s post players, including Brianne Alexander who earned First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors. In his three seasons as the lone assistant coach for at Arkansas Tech, the Golden Suns produced a 73-19 ledger, a pair of conference championships and three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.
A 2011 graduate of Centenary College where he was a two-year starter and team captain, Tubner began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas at Monticello before being promoted to assistant coach. He helped UAM to a 21-win campaign in 2011-12 and helped mentor three NCAA Division II All-American selections.
Tubner earned his bachelor’s in psychology while at Centenary, before graduating from UAM with master’s in physical education and coaching.
