The Avila University Department of Athletics is thrilled to announce Remy Davenport Wolfe as the university’s next head women’s basketball coach.
“I’m really excited to be able to have the opportunity to offer Remy this position,” Avila University Director of Athletics Shawn Summe says. “There was a very qualified candidate pool. Over the last three years I got the chance to watch Remy coach and work with the young ladies on our basketball team and one thing I realized is that her X’s and O’s are really sharp for someone who’s only coached for four years. She played at a high level, and she’s really learned from the coaches she’s played for dating back to AAU, high school, college.”
“I feel incredibly blessed to be given the opportunity to be the next head coach of the Avila women’s basketball team,” says Davenport. “It’s been a dream of mine to be a head coach since a very young age and I’m just very thankful to Shawn and Avila University for giving me the opportunity. So many people helped me along the way and I’m so thankful for each one. I would not be here without the support of so many people in my life, especially my family.”
After a standout prep career at Blue Springs South High School, Davenport became a three-year starter at the University of Nebraska, Omaha where she averaged 9.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game from 2014 to 2017. She was especially known as a sharpshooter for the Mavericks, knocking down 194 three-pointers in just three seasons, good for the third-highest total in program history at the time.
Davenport returned to her home state of Missouri to play her final year of college basketball at Truman State University in Kirksville, joining forces with her younger sister Tiffany Davenport for the 2017-18 season. After spending the 2018-19 season as a graduate assistant at Truman, Davenport has spent the past three seasons as Avila’s top assistant coach alongside fellow Blue Springs South alumna Torie Murillo.
Davenport has played a central role on an Avila women’s basketball team that has advanced to the championship game of the KCAC Tournament twice in her three years with the team. She’s been credited with numerous in-game adjustments and critical play calls, most famously the Matti Morgan-to-Kassidy Snowden buzzer-beater to force overtime against Sterling in the KCAC Tournament in 2020. Davenport has fostered connections with the players and coaches at Avila while developing her own skills as a coach for the past three years, something that helped elevate her to the head of a qualified pack of national candidates.
“We have 9 returners that will bring a lot of experience to the court and a few more coming in that I’m really excited about! It should be a fun year!” says Davenport. “I’m thankful to our current players who have given me a lot of support throughout the transition and process. They’ve been great and I can’t wait to get to continue coaching them in a different role! We have a good foundation and I can’t wait to continue building on that.”
“We want to win, but the biggest thing is that we want to graduate our students and we want them to have quality life experiences and be able to thrive in a mentor type of setting, and I think Remy fits that role really well,” Summe says. “She cares about the students holistically. I know that she’s going to continue to build this program to get to the point where we’re consistently at the top, working towards competing for championships in the KCAC, and then compete on that national level consistently.”
What they’re saying about Remy Davenport Wolfe:
“I believe Remy will be a successful coach, first and foremost, because she’s an excellent human being herself. She will exude those qualities onto her players and staff and it will translate to all aspects of the program from there. She has great relationships at all levels of the sport, both collegiately and in the club world. She played at a high level in both college and club, and understands what it takes to be successful both on and off the court.”
–Joe Erskine, Director, Eclipse Basketball Club (Kansas City)
“You always hope that student athletes can deliver one of three traits— leadership, success on the court, or success in the classroom. Once in a while, you find someone who can bring you all three and you know you’ve found someone special. Remy is one of those special people and I have no doubt that she will embody these qualities as a head coach.”
–Lindsey Ekwerekwu, Associate Athletic Director, University of Nebraska Omaha
“Remy is not only a student of the game, but one of the best people I know. Her passion for teaching, growing and loving the players will be unmatched. I’m extremely excited to see the impact she has on the program. Congratulations to her and to Avila as they are very fortunate to have her!”
–Amy Eagan, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Drury University
“Remy will be a great leader for Avila women’s basketball! With her outgoing personality she will do a great job connecting with her players, recruits, and the Avila community! Her basketball IQ is terrific and she has always had a great understanding of the X’s and O’s! I’m excited for her and Avila is lucky to have her as their next women’s basketball coach!”
–Kirk Walker, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, College of Saint Mary
