Army West Point hires Sorenson as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach

The Army West Point Women’s Basketball Team has announced the hiring of new Assistant Coach Darren Sorenson.

Sorenson brings over 20 years of coaching experience to the program. He has great familiarity with the Army culture and values as he transitions to the new role after previously working in Army A Club as the Assistant Director.

“Darren has over 20 years of coaching experience that ranges across a variety of levels. He has worked under highly decorated head coaches and developed some of the most successful athletes in the country. With Darren having prior knowledge of the Academy, he already has a leg up in his transition. He has an incredible passion for the game of basketball and we are eager to bring him on to help develop our cadet-athletes.” – Missy Traversi, Army West Point Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Prior to coming to West Point, he spent eight years (2007-2015) as the Assistant Coach of the men’s program at Oakland University in Auburn Hills, MI. During his time there, the program had its best six-year stretch, seeing the postseason five straight times while winning 127 games. Sorenson helped lead the Golden Grizzlies to three straight conference titles (2009-2011) and back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (2010-2011).

He has coached two conference players of the year, 16 1,000-point scorers, and 22 all-conference players. He has guided three All-Americans and one Mid-Major Player of the Year. To add to that, he has also coached an NCAA leader in assists, steals, three-pointers, and scoring. Sorenson has seen four players drafted into the NBA during his career. During his last eight seasons on the sidelines, Sorenson’s team made four championship game appearances and had been to the postseason in 7-of-8 years, including four NCAA Tournaments.

Sorenson has worked with a variety of successful head coaches and programs, including Stan Heath (Arkansas), Steve Lavin (UCLA), Lefty Driesell (Georgia State), and Mike LaPlante (Jacksonville State).
