Bloomsburg University head women’s basketball coach Bill Cleary has announced the addition of BU alum Alyssa Flanagan to his coaching staff as assistant coach.
Flanagan returns to Bloomsburg after spending the last two years as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s basketball program at DeSales University. She helped the Bulldogs to a pair of winning seasons including a 20-7 record during the 2013-14 campaign.
“I am beyond excited about coming back to Bloomsburg,” Flanagan said. “Coaching at my alma mater is a dream come true. I can’t wait to bring my enthusiasm and passion for this program day in and day out. It’s great to be home.”
It is a homecoming for Flanagan who enjoyed a tremendous four-year career as a player with the Huskies. A starting point guard for Cleary all four seasons, she finished her career standing second in all-time program assists with 497. She was named the PSAC Tournament Most Valuable Player after leading the Huskies to the 2013 PSAC Championship and was a key part of back-to-back NCAA Tournament teams in 2012 and 2013. Flanagan was an integral member of the group of players that helped turn the Huskies into one of the region’s top programs, with her 2010-11 team starting a run of what is currently five consecutive 20-win seasons.
“We are thrilled to welcome Alyssa Flanagan back home. She was a great leader for us during her time here as a player and we are confident she will be even better as a coach,” Cleary said. “Her energy and passion will be an incredible asset for us as we look to take the program a step further to our ultimate goal of a national championship.”
A 2013 Bloomsburg University graduate, Flanagan was a four-year PSAC scholar-athlete and member of SAAC for four years during her time as a Huskies student-athlete. Flanagan was also a standout in high school playing for Hazleton Area High School, being named the Wyoming Valley Conference MVP three times and leading Hazleton Area to four WVC Championships and two District titles. She was also a Third-Team All-State selection twice.
The Huskies have reached the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 in each of the past two seasons. Bloomsburg will tip off its 2015-16 season on Nov. 13.
