Cal Poly Pomona head women’s basketball coach Danelle Bishop has announced the hiring of Ali Elmi as an assistant coach for the program ahead of the 2022-23 season.
Elmi comes to Cal Poly Pomona after spending the last four years as the lead assistant coach at Hope International University.
“Ali is an extremely loyal, hard working and dedicated coach,” said Bishop. “He is a tireless recruiter who is very well known in the high school ranks. His experience as a former defensive coordinator will fit right in to our on court philosophy. Ali is a CPP Alumni who bleeds green and gold. His ability to build rapport with players, coaches, administrators and alumni is invaluable. We are excited to have him join our Bronco Family.”
“It is great to be back at my alma mater working for Coach Bishop, whom I have a great level of respect for,” Elmi said. “Her track record of success and ability to lead a perennial program speak volumes about her leadership, staff, players and the university. Coach Bishop’s values and dedication to diversity are foundational for nurturing an environment of growth, both on and off the court, and are a reflection of the cohesiveness and inclusivity of the Cal Poly Pomona I remember, as a student, years ago.”
Elmi continued by saying, “I look forward to learning and growing together as a team while continuing to develop strong, independent women, who will be impactful ambassadors for CPP and the women’s basketball program in the future.”
While at Hope International, Elmi served as the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for the Royals women’s basketball program. He was instrumental in leading HIU to its best season in program history in 2021-22, compiling a 26-6 record and finishing the year ranked second nationally in scoring defense.
Prior to his time at Hope International, Elmi coached at Brea Olinda High School from 2013 to 2018, amassing an overall record of 123-29 to go along with one state title, a state runner-up finish, a pair of regional championships and one CIF Championship runner-up effort.
Elmi is a 2004 graduate of Cal Poly Pomona, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
