Alabama A&M University Director of Athletics, Dr. Paul A. Bryant, announced that a leadership change would be made in women’s basketball as head coach Margaret Richards stepped down to pursue other opportunities.
“We are grateful for the dedication and effort that Coach Richards has shown during her tenure with the Alabama A&M University women’s basketball program,” Bryant said. “Her commitment t our student-athletes has been unwavering, and we wish her the best in her future endeavors.”
During her eight seasons in Huntsville, Richards has compiled a 97-125 record, with six trips to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women’s Basketball Tournament and reaching the tourney semifinals during the 2019-2020 season. In addition, she compiled a 69-70 mark in conference play. During 2021-2022 season, Richards elevated the program to a second-place finish in the conference, notching a program-best 13 conference wins.
This season, Richards squad won 15 games, including going 10-4 at the AAMU Event Center and had non-conference victories over Tennessee Tech, UAH, North Alabama, South Carolina State and Chicago State. She coached All-SWAC Freshman of the Year Kaylah Turner and All-Second Team performer Amiah Simmons. Notably, Richards is the only coach in program history to not only sweep rival Alabama State but did it twice.
A national search will begin immediately.
