Kyle Adams Joins NCCU Women’s Basketball Coaching Staff

North Carolina Central University head coach Vanessa Taylor has announced the hiring of Kyle Adams as Assistant Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the women’s basketball program on Friday.

Adams is coming to NCCU after spending the past five years at his alma mater, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. He was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator his first two seasons there before being elevated to head coach in 2013.

“I am extremely excited about Coach Kyle Adams joining our program,” said Taylor. “Coach Adams has an extensive resume of basketball experience.”

In three seasons as head coach at Cheyney, Adams resurrected a Lady Wolves program to a more competitive status and increasing the squads win total over that span. He was then named 2016 Mentor of the Year by the Cheyney National Alumni Association. The award was presented to Adams for his dedication to Cheyney through his leadership, community engagement and fundraising initiatives.

“Coach Adam has spent the last five years devoted to the restoration of women’s basketball at Cheyney, where he was once a competitive student-athlete,” commented Taylor. “He has a keen knowledge of what it takes to build a successful program. His recent honor of Mentor of the Year at Cheyney speaks directly to his passion and drive to helping young people become successful.”

Adams, who recruited and coached a two-time All-PSAC performer and 1,200-point scorer, led Cheyney to its most notable victories in recent history by defeating defending CIAA champion Virginia State University and three regionally ranked conference opponents (Shippensburg University, Kutztown University and Bloomsburg University) in 2015-16.

A total of 19 women’s basketball student-athletes have graduated from Cheyney over the past three years under Adams direction. In 2015, Adams was selected as one of the 30 Head Coaches across the country to participate in the Center for Coaching Excellence by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

Adams has over 15 years of basketball coaching experience.

Prior to Cheyney, Adams started his coaching career as a men’s basketball assistant coach at a half dozen colleges and universities: Cheyney (1999-2000), Community College of Philadelphia (2000-02), Plattsburgh State University (2003-04), Eastern University (2004-05), Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (2008-09) and University of Rio Grande (2009-11).

Adams is the Founder of Team Together Basketball Academy, a summer basketball camp; which assists the next generation of student-athletes in improving their skill set and mental approach to society, athletics and academics. He also co-founded LOOK, LISTEN, SHARE, CHANGE; which encourages and inspires young people to become socially conscience and assertive contributors of society.

A native of Philadelphia, Adams graduated from Cheyney with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology in 1999. Two years later, Adams obtained a Master of Education in athletic coaching and leadership from Rio Grande.  He is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), Advocates for Athletic Equity (formerly known as the Black Coaches and Administrators) and the Epsilon Pi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated.

“Coach Adams has great expertise in strategic game planning and play, player development, fundraising and camp guidance and direction. He is relentless in his pursuit of excellence and will be a tremendous asset to our program,” concluded Taylor.
