Academy of Art University Athletics has officially announced Brian Green as its new assistant coach for women’s basketball. Green, a former professional basketball player whose 10-year career took him to the National Basketball Association and overseas, will work alongside head coach Camille Williams and assistant coach Krystle Evans.
“We are truly thankful to welcome Brian Green to our coaching staff at ART U,” said Williams. “He’s a natural fit to our staff with his level of expertise in player development, experience, and wealth of knowledge of the game. Brian is very driven and passionate in coaching as well as a genuine person. With his professional background and training, he will instantly gain the respect of his coworkers, players, and community.”
A talented athlete at a young age, Green began his career at John Jay High School in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas. He helped his team to the 1991 State Championship game and was later named to the All-City Team and All-State Honorable Mention in 1992. A Junior Olympian and one of the top high school players in the state of Texas, Green continued to thrive at Howard Junior College and McClennan Community College before earning a scholarship to play at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Green led the Wolfpack in scoring as a junior and senior, finishing with career averages of 16.5 points per game (13th in school history when he departed despite playing only two seasons) and 4.5 rebounds per game. In 1996, he helped guide Nevada to within a basket of the NCAA Tournament, earning Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
Following the 1996 NBA Draft, Green signed a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns and participated in both the Los Angeles Summer League and Salt Lake City Summer League. Impressing the coaching staff and owners, he was then invited to Veterans Camp with fellow rookies Ben Davis and future NBA MVP Star Steve Nash. Green went on to play in the Philippines, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, China, and Bosnia (he had a 54-point game in an International Basketball Association game in 2000 and was the MVP of the league championships series that season). In 2003, Green would return to his hometown to play for the San Antonio Spurs with whom he spent seven summers training alongside many NBA players including Malik Rose, Bruce Bowen, Brent Barry, and Stephen Jackson as well as legends David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili.
In 2002, Green bought partnership of a manufacturer, Play to Score Sports Gear, which makes sports uniforms and apparel, and has focused on that business in addition to serving as an associate head coach for Northview High School (2010-12), an assistant coach at Marist High School (2012-13), and subsequently becoming the War Eagles’ head coach from 2013-17.
“I want to thank Brad Jones, Camille Williams, and Krystle Evans for this opportunity to coach in the PacWest Conference,” said Green. “I am truly honored by their expression of confidence in me to be a part of the women’s basketball program. I am ready to work in every capacity for Academy of Art University, the city of San Francisco, the athletic department, and the women’s basketball team. I am excited to join a staff that I believe has a lot of passion, intellect, and most importantly a great work ethic. It is my pleasure to contribute in developing the next generation of ART U student-athletes.”
Green earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Community Health Science-Physical Therapy from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2016.
