After 19 seasons leading the Middle Georgia State University women’s basketball program as the team’s head coach, Anderson Ligon has made the decision to step down from the position as announced by Director of Athletics, Michael Brown.
Ligon will continue in his role as an Associate Professor in the MGA School of Business while turning his focus to full-time teaching beginning in the 2025-26 academic year.
“It has been an honor to lead this program and work with such dedicated student-athletes, staff, and administration,” remarked Ligon.
“I am grateful for the support and opportunities I have had during my time as head coach and will always appreciate the relationships built along the way. While I am stepping away from coaching, I remain committed to the university’s mission and core values and look forward to continuing with contributions in the classroom and community,” continued Ligon.
Coach Ligon compiled over 100 victories at both the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) levels in his 19 seasons on the bench highlighted by a 2009 NJCAA Region XVII and District J championships and a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament that season in Salina, Kansas.
More recently, Ligon led the Knights through the COVID-19 effected campaign of 2020-21 in which his team earned a 14-5 overall record, a 9-3 mark in the Southern State Athletic Conference and the SSAC East Division championship.
“I’m grateful for Coach Ligon’s leadership of the MGA women’s basketball program and the impact he’s had on the many student-athletes to come through the program,” said Brown.
“He leaves behind a legacy of high character, grit and unselfishness as he hands the baton to the next leader for MGA women’s basketball and we wish him well as he transitions into full-time teaching,” continued Brown.
Prior to his time leading the Knights, Ligon was the head men’s basketball coach at Alabama Southern Junior College from 1999-2004 while serving Alabama Southern as the coach of the women’s team as well in the 2004-05 season. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Mobile College (now known as the University of Mobile) as a graduate assistant coach before being elevated into an assistant coach position.
Ligon was born in Tuskegee, Alabama and is married to the former Sherri Lynn Kidd of Mobile, Alabama. The couple has two adult children, Dominic and Alexis.
MGA will launch a national search for the next head women’s basketball coach with more details to soon follow.
