Norfolk State University head women’s basketball coach Larry Vickers announced the addition and return of two assistant coaches to his Spartan coaching staff. Joining NSU is Keiva Small-Mings, while familiar face Trinese Fox returns to the Spartans coaching lineup.
Fox returns to Sparta after spending the 2022-23 season as an assistant basketball coach for East Tennessee State. While at ETSU, Fox helped the Buccaneers to a 25-10 overall record and a postseason seed at the WBI Tournament where the Bucs finished third after defeating Georgia Southern.
Prior to going to East Tennessee State, Fox spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the Norfolk State women’s basketball program during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. While at NSU she served as an assistant coach as well as adding the duties of recruiting coordinator during 2021-22.
In her previous time at Norfolk State, Fox made a big impact as she helped the Spartans improve by 12 wins between the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. The Spartans received their first-ever appearance in the WNIT in 2022. Fox helped guide NSU to 17-12 record in 2021-22 with an 11-3 record in MEAC play, resulting a share of the regular season title.
Fox returns to Norfolk State as the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach while also serving as the Associate Head Coach of Player Development.
“After making an immediate impact as a Spartan the first time around and bringing in the largest recruiting class in Norfolk State history, we’re super excited to bring back Coach Fox’s dedication into the fray,” said head coach Larry Vickers. “She truly understands our mission statement and vision.”
Small is a 2008 graduate of Longwood University where she played four seasons for the Lancers. She led the Lancers as a captain her senior season while also collecting several accolades throughout her playing career.
As a Lancer, Small appeared in 107 games during which she scored 994 career points with 460 rebounds, 307 assists, 56 blocks, and 177 steals.
Following her collegiate career, Small went to play four seasons overseas in Italy, Finland, and Romania.
Small will join NSU as the Assistant Director of Player Development & Special Projects.
“Keiva is no stranger to Norfolk basketball and this All-Eastern District election and Defensive Player of the Year will fit right in with our culture,” said Vickers. “Her professional experience and knowledge will be extremely beneficial to our players. We’re so happy to have her.”
