Bob Jones University Bruins Head Women’s Basketball Coach Mike LeViere announced the hiring of former Bruin standout Sha’Ron Brunson as the team’s new assistant coach. Brunson takes over for Maggi Wooster who served as the assistant coach for the past five seasons and joined the BJU sport management faculty this year.
“We are excited to have Sha’Ron return to the women’s basketball program,” Coach LeViere said. “From my first interaction with her Sha’Ron stood out as someone who had talent but also was willing to put in the work to achieve desired results. We talk all the time in our program about making incremental improvements each day and she has always taken that to heart. I am confident she will be able to hit the ground running and have a positive impact right away.”
Brunson was a four-year player for the Bruins basketball team where she had an outstanding career (2014-18). She was a two-time All-Region player and during the 2017-18 season Brunson was named the DII South Region Player of the Year.
She finished her career with the team with 968 points while also grabbing over 450 rebounds with the Bruins. Brunson also served as one of the team captains in her career and was instrumental in helping the Bruins capture their first region championship in program history in 2017.
Since then, Brunson has been around the program often returning to speak at practice or team functions. After graduating from BJU, she worked as a reporter for the Greenville News in South Carolina covering a variety of areas of news and sports. Recently, Brunson returned to Bob Jones University where she was working with the Bellis Copy Center on campus.
“During her time here as a player, Sha’Ron embodied what we desire our program to be about,” Coach LeViere said. “She is authentic in her relationship with Christ and was extremely hardworking and focused on her individual skill development while at the same time she was a great teammate and willing to put the team first. Her basketball skills and experiences will definitely be drawn upon to influence our team in a positive way.”
The Bruins basketball team is excited to begin the 2022-23 season as the team hopes to defend their 2021-22 region championship. The Bruins open the season on November 8 as the team faces Brevard College in Brevard, North Carolina.
BJU is a provisional member of NCAA DIII and an NCCAA member. The BJU Bruins feature 13 varsity programs and over 200 student-athletes.
