American University Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Billy Walker has announced that longtime associate head coach Tiffany Coll will take over as the 14th head coach in AU women’s basketball program history.
Coll was hired as an assistant coach with the program in 2013 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2018. The 2022-23 season will be her 10th with the Eagles.
“We are thrilled to announce the hiring of Tiffany Coll as the next head coach of the American University Women’s Basketball team. Tiffany has been an integral part of our recent success and is a skilled recruiter, coach, and leader of young women. Her wealth of coaching experience and commitment to the values and mission of AU Athletics will be of great benefit as the program moves forward under her leadership.” -Dr. Billy Walker, Director of Athletics & Recreation
Throughout the last nine seasons, Coll has been a vital member of the most successful staff in program history, accumulating an overall record of 160-106 (.602) and 105-48 (.686) in Patriot League play. Included in that run were the program’s only three Patriot League Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2015, 2018, and most recently in 2022.
She continued to help rewrite the program’s history books time and again with five 22+ win seasons, three PL regular-season titles, and two WNIT berths.
“I am incredibly honored and grateful to be selected as the head coach of women’s basketball at American University. Thank you to President Burwell, Dr. Billy Walker, Josephine Harrington, and the rest of the AU selection committee for the opportunity to lead a tremendous group of young women. I look forward to continuing to meet and exceed the established tradition both on the court and in the classroom. The same principles by which I live my life – hard work, discipline, and relentless attention to detail – will be the foundation for future championships. My husband Dan, son Chase, and I look forward to this journey toward cutting down more nets with our American Women’s Basketball family.”

With her on staff, the Eagles developed some of the best players to ever wear the AU uniform, including five Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year, four PL Players of the Year, two NCAA Woman of the Year nominees, an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient, and a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Chief among those was Cecily Carl (’19), who graduated as one of only three players in program history to be selected as the PL Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the same season. Carl was also the third player in AU history to earn over 100 blocks, 500 rebounds, and 1,000 points in her career.
Prior to her time at American, Coll had stops at Towson (2012-13), Lehigh (2008-12), Navy (2007-08), and St. John’s (2005-07). During her time as an assistant at Lehigh, she helped the Mountain Hawks to a 93-35 (.730) overall record, including three 21+ win seasons, three Patriot League regular season titles, and two PL Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament berths. She also recruited and helped coach three Patriot League Players of the Year and nine All-Patriot League selections.
A successful player in her own right, Coll was a two-time team captain while at UMBC and was invited to the 2003 and 2004 InfoSport Professional Women’s Basketball Player Combine. She went on to play professionally overseas, first in the English Basketball League’s First Division from 2003-04 before joining the Dutch League’s First Division where she helped lead the team to a 10-2 record and playoff appearance. Coll closed her playing career as both a player and coach in the German Bundesliga.
Coll graduated from UMBC with her bachelor’s degree in issues in athletic administration in 2003 and earned her master’s in sociology from St. John’s in 2007. She lives in Rockville, Md., with her husband, Dan, and son, Chase.
